Computer rankings of NC's travel ball teams

    Below are computer ratings of the 231 N.C. teams known to have played at least one bracket game in 2014 in tournaments played in North Carolina and sanctioned by ASA, ECSA USSSA, IFA, NSA or TopGun.

    Edit: This is through March 17. Will be updated later this week.

    Teams are ranked in five divisions – 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, HS.

    The rankings model used is similar to those that to produce RPI ratings for NCAA basketball teams or BCS rankings for college football.

    However, not many games have been played N.C. travel ball in 2014, and limited data, and limited common opponents, will make for some erratic and hard-to-explain ratings in the early going. What you see today should be judged on its effort and its potential over the season as a whole.

    That said, Aunt Bee believes these ratings will provide a valuable and unique statewide glimpse of the relative strengths of teams across North Carolina. It’s doubtful that statewide computer rankings that pull together scores from all organizations has been attempted in any state.

    Some tweaks in the formula will be considered. The computer model is designed to rank football teams, so some consideration will be given to how the model might be altered to accommodate softball scores and tournament-style competition, such as weighing certain games more heavily than others.

    If there is sufficient interest, and she has sufficient time, Aunt Bee will serve these rankings weekly on this site.

    Please note that Aunt Bee didn't produce these rankings. They are done by a computer rankings expert. (No, not Goober Pyle.) Further, Aunt Bee is not affiliated with any tournament organization or sanctioning body. She does not coach or assist with any travel ball team in any way.

    Thanks for responding. Lots of views, but finally a brave question-asker. :)

    Also, fwiw, I hope to publish updated rankings this week from last weekend's tournaments.

    The ratings are done by a friend of mine that I would call a computer ratings hobbyist. His computer rankings have been published in the media for high school football and basketball, perhaps some pro and college sports as well. I think they're as good as those that do the BCS (ie, Massey, Colley).

    I help collect the data (tournament results). We experimented with it last year with one age division, and it came out pretty well. Didn't publish it, but showed it to a few coaches who thought they were pretty accurate.

    The ratings published here are based on an average of only 2.5 games per team, so it will take time for the rankings to take shape as they should.

    There are things about the sport of softball that make it harder to rate with a computer than other sports in the short term. I won't get into all that unless someone is interested. But for the time being, I'm just hoping to produce the data and have people make of it what they will.

    As I noted before, no one who is a part of these rankings are a part of any softball organization. We're not tournament officials or coaches. Just fans.

    As much as i want to give credit to the rankings, I have a tough time beleiving the substance behind the reasoning of the rankings. If you play in the top level brackets week by week, and if you play against the top competition in the South, your record will not compete with those teams that play in lower level tournaments. Which is about 90% of the teams out their. Question, how come their isn't a 18 and over bracket vs. the high school bracket? it's a big difference between the two.
    At least you're doing something that promotes softball. It's makes interesting talking points.

    Ok sounds good, and it will balance out through out the year as to the top teams, I am sure someone will complain or have a reason why their team is not ranked higher, but I think its a good idea and will enjoy following along.

    High and Tight and In you have a valid point however I would say their are only a handful of teams in the state who actually place kids in major D1 schools on a consistent level and play more of a national schedule, I would think there is another source out there for rankiing those teams who consistently compete at that level. There are a great deal of teams who dont necessarily go and compete in these national showcase events who could play quite well and beat a lot of the teams who do, some of them have a different mind set about competition, they still believe winning and team takes priority over the individual, and quite frankly I wish a lot more teams would go back to putting the emphasis on winning more, I personally think that would improve the quality of the game in NC. Of course these are only my opinions and mean nothing against the mainstream business that showcase softball has become.
