Can someone tell me how someone lays claim to a "National Championship" without playing a National tournament with teams from all over the nation???
How does that award just get bestowed???

My guess would be Maxpreps awarding of the mythical high school National Champions. What a farce. You cannot possibly guess that x team would have beat y team should a national championship have taken place. For that matter you cannot even guess that team x would have made it to the championship game when going head to head with the top 8, 10, 12 teams in the nation.

    Someone needs to rethink this.

i kinda got called out on this as my reply questioned how this title could of been bestowed on a team without playing in a national tournament.....in humor, i suggested it might be bestowed for money, or self bestowed....i still don't know who it was, really don't care, because it just makes them look bad anyway to the people who really know what it takes to earn that title....People, in my humble opinion, softball is crumbling because it has become all about ME, and how great of a Coach I Am and these people are forgetting what it was all about......the girls....some pretty shady characters out there right now......in my opinion that is

    Amen,Cheese, Amen.

I am so sick of the me, me, me, me, me and you are right, it is ruining the sport. I see it all around, all the time.

I have watched parents turn red with rage when their kid was not given an award they thought their kid had earned, completely discounting what the kid that received the award had contributed.

I have watched, over and over again, parents and kids threaten to quit teams (or doing so) because they felt they/the kid was not getting the playing time and recognition they thought they should even though their play was not up to par.

I have watched players set out to purposefully throw other players under the bus, often through lies, or harass fellow players that they felt were in the way of *me* until they quit.

I have watched coaches tell players that you made *me* look bad, you may make *me* lose my job, it is your job to win to make *me* look good.

This last weekend, my daughter showed me the social media site of someone she knows that plays and this girl went on for HOURS about how *she* should have gotten the award "Jane" got, how not getting it virtually ruined her entire life, how she was the *most important and best* player on the team and how not getting it ruined her entire collegiate experience.

    Seriously?

I coached recreation softball for many years and while I abhor the "you showed up everyone gets a trophy" philosophy that rules these days, and helps create this self-centered environment, I did award trophies at the end of the year - to every single girl. Each girl received recognition for a contribution to her TEAM and were meant to build not only self-confidence but also were meant to teach all the players to truly look at the different ways people contribute. There was the run generator, for the girl that might rarely get a hit but always did her best to move a player. There was the down and dirty, for the girl that was always willing to eat the dirt if it meant an out for her team. And there was always, always the team spirit award given to the girl that played completely selflessly and did whatever she could to help her team succeed, even if that was just cheering like crazy for them.

If we want this amazing sport to survive and if we want to inspire, it is up to US to that the "me" out of it, by teaching the girls from day one that it is always, always "we" and it is the teams that think in terms of "we" that are champions in the end.

    Tooting their own horn!

Some people have toot their own horn to make themselves relevant.
Why do we feel the need to build ourselves up while tearing others down?

    A "ranking" doesn't mean you're a National Champion.

It means you are ranked #1, which should be enough in itself!

Good question. I've seen some really good talent this year but never knew we had a team in our state that was contending for a national title. Actually, I never knew such a title existed but they must be pretty good to hold this title. I like good softball so hopefully I have the honor to watch this team play some day.
