NC State will need a hero to emerge pitching-wise...maybe Russell Wilson to the rescue, but I can't imagine him having many innings left in his arm.

    pitcher emerge

so far it's been lefty Alex Sogard. He's had just enough.........so far.

edit: Sogard out, righy Charma in. State up 3-2.

Russell Wilson in as a PH.......nice line drive single to right. and he stays in at LF on defense.

    FSU wins it

Game mared by unfortunate collision at home plate that knocked out the Pack catcher Chris Shaeffer. He was transported to hospital from the field by emergency staff. Scary moments.

....yes a ery violent collision at the plate, no malice from what I saw, but I think that the FSU runner should have been out for not avoiding the collision. Maybe the play was called right, but Chris was 1/2 of a second from catching the ball and BAM!.

Lauren Peters, NCSU softball senior is the longtime girlfriend of Shaeffer, she was the girl on the field, bigtime concerned, also my DDs roommate, as soon as I get an update I'll post it.
    Prayers for sure!!!!!!!

Props to the wolfpack for a great ACC tourney and wrapping up a berth in the NCAAs.

.....Chris has a concussion, and MRIs have resulted in negatives, ie good news. Probably out for the rest of the season, giving that the NCAAs start soon and NCSU looks like they have played their way into the dance.

If a college kid has a headache, its usually from staying up late and having a pop or two, this pain for Chris is one for the team, gotta give him props!!!

Yeah, they are very careful with concussions. They held my son out 5 weeks last year---a series of tests and a qualified Dr determined when he could go back to playing.

Yes, it is unfortunate, but it was a legal play. A catcher can not block the running lane until he has received the ball. A very misunderstood rule by many watching...in fact, the umpire can rule it as obstruction. The problem I have with it was the lowering of the shoulder---thought that wasn't permissible. But even with a player DQ'd the run would still have counted.

Thanks for the update on the kid Fish...that's good news.

....i'm no big man, 6 foot and 165 lbs with my boots on and dripping wet, so if I'm coming into a base and know that theres gonna be fireworks, then I'm doing what my football coaches told me,.."son, they'll kill you, your only chance is to lay the lumber, deliver the blow to the guy that is tackling you". Unfortunately it didn't work because the fish got his bell rung over and over again, thank God for a baseball schollie. Anyway, the point is the kid from FSU did lower his shoulder Braves but you can't blame him for that.
Pure instinct. No harmful intent from what I saw.
BTW, that kid took a headache home too.

Hope for sure that these kids are alright.

Interesting in how an infielder has a right to field a ball hit but a catcher does not have a right to field a ball thrown. Rules are rules but with concern about concussions - maybe it needs to be revisited - time to look out for those guys behind the plate who take more punishment than anyone else on the field without the plays at the plate.

Also seems that if you do not make the conference tournament that it should affect your RPI since I believe it does adjust for those that do play in a conference tournament (also not playing in conference tournament gives opportunity to rest arms)

    RULE 8 Base Running

    NCAA Collision Rule

SECTION 7. The rules committee is concerned about unnecessary and

violent collisions with the catcher at home plate, and with infielders at all

bases. The intent of this rule is to encourage base runners and defensive

players to avoid such collisions whenever possible.

    a. When there is a collision between a runner and a fielder who clearly is

in possession of the ball, the umpire shall judge:

    (1) Whether the collision by the runner was avoidable (could the runner

have reached the base without colliding) or unavoidable (the runner’s

    path to the base was blocked);

    (2) Whether the runner actually was attempting to reach the base (plate)

or attempting to dislodge the ball from the fielder; or

    (3) Whether the runner was using flagrant contact to maliciously

    dislodge the ball.

PENALTY—If the runner attempted to dislodge the ball, the runner shall

be declared out even if the fielder loses possession of the

ball. The ball is dead and all other base runners shall return

to the last base touched at the time of the interference.

A.R. 1—If the fielder blocks the path of the base runner to the base (plate), the runner may make contact, slide into, or collide with a fielder as long as the runner is making a legitimate attempt to reach the base or plate.

A.R. 2—If the flagrant or malicious contact by the runner was before the runner’s touching the plate, the runner shall be declared out and also ejected from the contest. The ball shall be declared dead immediately. All other base runners shall return to the bases they occupied at the time of the pitch.

A.R. 3—If the contact was after a preceding runner had touched home plate, the preceding runner will be ruled safe, the ball becomes dead immediately and all other base runners will return to the base they had last touched before the contact.

A.R. 4—If the runner is safe and the collision is malicious, the runner shall be ruled safe and ejected from the game. If this occurs at any base other than home, the offending team may replace the runner.

    b. If the defensive player blocks the base (plate) or base line clearly

without possession of the ball, obstruction shall be called. The umpire

shall point and call, “That’s obstruction.” The umpire shall let the play

continue until all play has ceased, call time and award any bases that are justified in Rule 2. The obstructed runner is awarded at least one base
beyond the base last touched legally before the obstruction.

A.R. 5—If the base runner collides flagrantly, the runner shall be declared safe on the obstruction, but will be ejected from the contest. The ball is dead.

I'd hate to be an umpire
