Runners on first and second 1 out, batter hits what appears to be a walk-off HR, but C/F catches the ball and falls over fence, and holds onto the ball, otherwords a catch...does the batter get awarded a HR or is she out ,and what happens to the runners on base ??

Assuming everything as you said... catch, out. Assuming that wasn't the third out, then base runners get two bases from where they were standing when the pitch was thrown...

Assuming they go back and touch the base after the catch. Otherwise, the defense could appeal for leaving early.

From the NFHS Rulebook, DEAD BALL TABLES, page 47

    Rule 5-1-1i

    Note 8-4-3j

So....first a judgement call from the umpire. Did the fielder intentionally take the ball out of play. In this case, I would say no. The batter is out. ball is dead. Base runners are awarded 1 base. Runners now on 3rd base and 2nd base, 2 outs.

Where I see it getting murky is since a dead ball was declared when the ball went out of play, do the runners have to return to their orginal base if they were not on the base when the fielder touched the ball before being awarded the 1 base?

That's what I get for not thinking.

Catch and carry is only one base. Since it was a legal catch, if they left the bases, the runners must retouch the base to advance, even to get the one base award. Assuming the defense waits long enough for them to do this before appealing, an appeal for failure to return should result in an out. Rule 8-6-6, 2-2b, 2-3b2.

Thanks for Stingray for setting me straight on the number of bases.

Hey, I was even in y'alls lovely state for 90 minutes or so yesterday. Easiest route between Greenville and Fort Mill is via Charlotte.

    My guess...

I have not looked at any of the other answers, so could be looking stupid...but I think it is the 2nd out and runners are tagging up and going as far as they can get on the sac fly.... yes or :apeani:?

DD* raises a good point. When "OP" said a catch, I read that in to it. I should not have. OTOH, in ASA, the second foot could be on the (possibly knocked over) fence and it could still be a catch.
