Legion Ball

Strikeoutking18, who would I need to contact about scheduling a game versus you guys. I coach Roxboro Post 138 and would like to play against some different teams this year and also step up the level of competition. Your program is where I would like our program to be in the future. This will be our fourth year of Legion ball. We are trying to build a strong program here in Roxboro and for the first three years have had respectable seasons, missing the play-offs by one game the last two years. If you could leave me some information on who to contact I would really like to play your team and experience the feeling of a whole community supporting the legion program.

Try getting ahold of Steve Bumgarner at his home in the evening, and that number I believe is (828) 754-2417...I am sure they would be glad to get a game lined up with you, we have a lot of teams come in each summer to sort of take in the "Caldwell Legion Experience." If that doesn't work, let me know, it really would be good for your program, and you could see how deep the community is involved with our program. Good luck.

 

I dont know how not having 19yo playing makes the product better?
Seems to me that with the new Jr Legion program in many parts of the state you dont have as many 14,15,16 year olds riding the bench watching for 90% of the games...

 

Good point coach, haven't given the addition of jv teams much thought. You maybe right overall.

 

I realize again that some people feel programs like Caldwell are the exception and not the rule, but here is my argument for keeping the 19 year olds. Caldwell had a couple kids this year that were playing for community colleges/junior colleges. Because of their play they are now getting looks at 4-year schools. One kid is now playing at Catawba after not seeing the baseball field at the school originally went to.

Playing devils advocate, some kids are sold a bill of goods when they are recruited and then when they realize that, want to go somewhere else. Playing legion as a 19 year old actually gives some kids a second chance.

Just my thoughts...

 

Program Budgets in Legion

Downsouth and Moose, I have seen where some mention that their Legion programs cost like $12,000 to operate for a years budget.
Caldwell County, from what I understand, has a yearly budget of over $50,000 and is planning a trip to Washington, D.C. in 2005.

With a bunch of great guys returning we may make another run at it next season.

 

This is a Hall of Fame thread. There was more good discussions in here than I can ever remember.

I do realize that the Caldwell Co legion's budget is higher that others. But again I think it shows the support in this area for the program as every year the area sponsors and private donors give what they can so the players don't have to pay. That 50,000 budget pays for a charter bus and game meals for when the guys travel and at home few can argue the beauty that is MS Deal Stadium which also takes a few pennies.

This began as a "which do you perfer" thread and I think this just adds to my case for Legion baseball. Caldwell County is by no means a rich area as the furniture industry has seen better days, but the people come out and support the baseball team and the programs sees that the money is there for the guys. I think it means alot that the players have a home to play and when they are on the road, they worry about nothing.

 

I love this post...makes me want to go to Caldwell Co. just to watch a game.

This board is totally awesome.

I do hope that more Area 4 fans will post here. I am going to tell all those i see and talk to about it and by doing so I think the fans who read about Area 4 it will realize the intensity of playing in Area 4.

All other areas have their powerhouse programs, but Area 4 has 3 dream programs in Caldwell County, Cherryville and Shelby, with a few others coming on strong.

Unless you live in it, (area 4) it's hard to realize the high level of play, the intensity and the depth of the rivalries. Also the passion of the fans. As well, the professionalism of the top programs is astonishing.

StrikeoutKing18's post was very moving and inspiring and shows the level of commitment of the Caldwell players and how the players love the team and each other.

I'm sure it's true on other top teams as well, but it is an amazing thing.
