In regards to high school players:

Would someone please help me answer a few questions?

    1. What is the proper technique in timing a player from home to first. Should there be a normal bat swing, stand in a sprinters stance, etc. If swinging, when should clock start?

    2. What is the average time from home to first? I would like to know a good time for a fast runner, average runner and a slow runner.

    Thanks for your help.

When timing a runner from home start the watch on the contact with the pitch by the bat. A fast time is anything under 3 seconds. The top college and Olympic speedsters are in the 2.4 - 2.5 range.

Have them swing a bat, start the time when swing is finished and time through first base. Make sure your child runs through the bag at full speed to get the quickest time.
3 seconds or less is outstanding, 3.2 to 3.6 is probably the norm. The fastest I have seen was 2.80 but have heard times of 2.7, which is hard to believe but I am sure has happened. Good luck

either of these methods are acceptable... The college coach just needs to know if the time was from the crack of the bat like teanws or from the finish of the swing or on the first step. Because everyone starts the clock just a little bit differently, this let's them get a more accurate idea of the time...
