The rules are the same for everyone except private schools. There are "dead periods" these are periods of time that no coach can work with any of the players at anytime. They are about a month long usually a week before the start of football and basketball and run about a month. All other times you can only work with 8 at a time. This means if 8 guys come out on Monday you can only work with that 8 that day. On Tuesday you can have the same 8 or different guys but no more than 8. Now you can have "open field" on the days you are not working with 8. This means that you can open up the facilities to whoever wants to work out. But at no time can a coach be present during "open field". You can not have open field and work with 8 on the same day. You can have non baseball related acitivities anytime. Such as weightlifting running plyos etc. It is my understanding that the NCHSSAA is trying to have weightlifing taken away during "dead periods". Any other coaches that want to weigh in here please do so. The rules and penalties are in the Coaches Handbook that is issued each year. Violations of these rules are very stiff and can result in the banishment from postseason play.

I believe the coach can be present but not participating (sitting in bleachers). Safety issues? May be the most violated rule on the books.

So according to the rules....you can't have 8 kids on 2 fields for a total of 16 during the same session with the coach standing between the fields??

What if the coach has his own indoor hitting facility that he has open to the public, could more than 8 of his player go workout there as long as he makes them pay?

    Help!

I wish that someone could explain the reasoning for this rule. I respect the dead period rule, but fail to understand these tight restrictions placed on high school baseball coaches. They have a very difficult task in getting their teams ready for play within 7-10 days after their tryouts. The High School coaches that I know follow this rule to the letter. Training for football has become almost year round. While the baseball players are going through their practices/ games, there are the football players going throught their spring workouts, which is followed by their supervised group weight training, followed by the team summer camps, just before the summer tryouts. I would like to understand the reasoning that baseball coaches cannot oversee the physical conditioning and open field workouts, and actually spend some quality time on individual & group instruction (more than 8).

That's a very good question. I'm believe that HS baseball coaches do not have the "power" to influence the decision makers to understand the reasoning of the questions you raised. Coach Evans, many times, urges all the baseball coaches to gather for meetings and come to the table with a stronger voice.
