I don't know Kayla ar any of the coaches but thought it was a class act by having her former coach Rickey Stoudemire, FHS head coach as well as her new coach at the signing.

Well Mr. Tony, I finally signed with Pfeiffer University last night. An awesome feeling to know that I'm one of the few girls that has worked hard over the years and made it to the collegiate level. I'll have some pictures up here later but for right now I'll just give you one of the articles. (I would link it but the site is stupid and makes you have a password to view it, so i'll just copy it).

    Aycock's Morris signs with Pfeiffer

By Nick Livingston, Daily Times Staff Writer

PIKEVILLE— Charles B. Aycock catcher Ashley Morris signed a letter-of-intent to play softball with NCAA Div. II Pfeiffer University of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference on Thursday.

Aycock head coach David West said that the production of college athletes like Morris and fellow college-signee Jenny Jackson comes from the deep-rooted program that Aycock has to offer.

"It's a good program, these girls start so early with travel ball," West said. "They have such good coaches all the way through that when they get to me I just get to reap the benefits of all that hard work. All I have to do is make out the lineup and halfway make everybody happy."

Morris is just happy to know that she is going to get a scholarship.

"It's a relief, finally," Morris said. "You work so hard for so long and finally you find one, so I'm pretty happy."

Morris had Pfeiffer on her mind when deciding what college to attend, but when they offered her a partial scholarship, she jumped at the chance.

"They were on my list and they saw me at a showcase and they contacted me," Morris said.

Pfeiffer head coach Sean Prescott said through communications with Morris and her visiting the university, she was a perfect fit.

West had one word for Morris' style on the diamond — aggressive.

"She's very aggressive on the field," West said. "She's aggressive behind the plate. She gets everybody going. She's very aggressive with her base running. She gets better and better with her bat."

Prescott also noted it is Morris' defensive skills that drew him to her the most.

"What I feel like she can contribute to Pfeiffer is her defensive skills behind the plate," Prescott said.

With a junior currently behind the plate, Prescott said he is going to play Morris early, working her into the lineup with the long college schedule the Lady Falcons plays.

"With us playing over 50 games, she will get playing time at one time or another," Prescott said. "We play a lot of doubleheaders, and catcher is a physically demanding position, so she'll get a chance."

The one thing Prescott said Morris would need to improve on is her batting.

"I would say that her hitting is one thing she will have to work with, but she definitely has the skill sets," Prescott said.

Morris said the biggest thing she will need to learn when she reaches Pfeiffer is adapting to the speed and skills of the college game.

"I've played for 13 years, so now it's just figuring out the college game, because everyone I talk to says that the college game is so different," Morris said. "I just want to figure out my coach's style of coaching and see how he does and how it works at the collegiate level if there ever was a chance for me to coach there."

However, attending Pfeiffer is not solely about playing softball for Morris, it is about gaining an education that will prepare her for life.

"I'm double majoring in pre-engineering and Christian education," Morris said. "Then I have to transfer to another university to major in chemical engineering. I'm hoping to get a pretty good Christian-based education while playing softball."

Prescott said that Pfeiffer is the perfect place for Morris to get the solid education she is looking for.

"Here at Pfeiffer she'll get the small college education with one-on-one teaching and an opportunity to play softball, which in most cases, is the elite level experience," Prescott said.

Morris said she wants to continue her softball career after school, but she is very realistic.

"I'd like to coach, and if the chance came up to maybe play beyond college, I'd consider it," Morris said. "But you only have so much time to pay back student loans."
