As several of you know and those who don't know, I am involved with Atlantic Coast Baseball, based in Wilson, NC. We have an elite high school league, youth handicapped baseball programs, a baseball store (we carry Brett Bros. equipment, George Brett's company), build indoor facilities, etc.

I was recently brought on board by Terry Pendleton (hitting coach of the Atlanta Braves) to assist his new baseball programs here in North Carolina. The philosophies fit into where I was with Atlantic Coast Baseball so it was a perfect match.

Beginning in late summer, we will be holding, "Prospect Trackers", which are to aid in player recruitment. The scale they use is 20/80 and the Trackers are ran by current and former MLB scouts. All evaluations are posted on the Pendleton website and included into their database. We will run two-four of these in central/eastern North Carolina.

The other program to note, will begin in August. That is called the D-1 Tour. The Tour will hold tryouts throughout the state with the top 80 players being selected to four teams. Once teams are selected they will play for five weekends this fall in five different D-1 stadiums. Each weekend they will play 3 games (2 on Saturday, 1 on Sunday) for a total of 15 games for five weeks. Coaches of each team will be current and former MLB scouts and their goal over the five weeks is to write an accurate evaluation of their players, over the five weeks.

After the five week period is over, an all-star team is selected out of the 80 players to form Team Carolina who will then play at the Pendleton Wood Bat Fall Nationals at Tigertown in Lakeland Florida (home of Detroit Tigers) the last weekend of October. Last year there were over 250 scouts on hand to watch the tournament which is combined with the Florida Community College All-Star game.

Anyway, thanks for your time. If you have questions, check out the Pendleton website, www.pendletonbaseball.com. Please excuse their current site, it is the middle of being restructured, but they have much of their information up.

If you have further questions for me, I can be reached at [email protected]. I will also be updating my website, www.atlantic-coast-baseball.com with area information in regards to Pendleton Baseball.

    Thanks again.

    I wish you guys luck.

As you stated over on the High School Baseball Web, new start-ups in North Carolina are difficult, but any program that increases opportunities for players in NC is welcome (in my mind)!!!

Right now, I'd say 80% of our readership centers in the western half of the state, so, geographically, for most people who visit, it's not yet a practical solution to any of their needs.

Does your "championship" conflict directly with the WWBA event down in Jupiter (probably Fort Myers again this year with the hurricaine damage)? The WWBA events seem to be drawing the top area players, so I was just wondering.

Thanks for the reply. We also have an established travel program out of Charlotte that will be directing that western part of the state. I just want to clarify for posters that I have the central/eastern NC as my area and the other group will patrol the western part of the state.

We will be running 2 out of the five D-1 tour sites over in the western part of the state. UNC-Greensboro and Charlotte I believe are the two we will be hitting. The others tentatively include NC State, UNC-Wilmington & ECU. Of course, that can change.

The good part of what Terry is doing, is he is making several calls himself which will establish the organization as more than just 'name-dropping'. The guy who is in charge of establishing the D-1 Tour and securing sites is George Blackburn, a Reds associate scout. As soon as he gives me definites, we will post them here to make available.

And you are absolutely correct, trying something different in this state is very difficult. But with the right people pushing it and helping establish a solid foundation, it just might work.

That's the key...now finding out who they are will be the difficult part.

I think that with the networking that has been done through the years by Terry it will allow us an in with the high school coaches as well as the premier travel organizations. Who will make those phone calls is beyond me at this point, but once the product is put on display, I truly feel that it will take care of itself.

The scouts who get hired for the D-1 tour and Prospect Trackers in the state of North Carolina will be paid well thus pushes them to promote the camps a little bit more. The name Pendleton will help us get in the door, and the product will make us a household name.

A little jab if I may? Sorry, but those of us in the mountains don't consider Greensboro the western part of the state. Why don't you try one at WCU or West Henderson (which has more facilities, cages etc. than any college in the area).

I was simply passing along the information and colleges they were targeting for the first fall tour. I will be more than happy to pass along the locations on the western part of the state. The western part of the state has a different director and I will pass along your request to that group.

If you have further questions, let me know.
