"There's 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th..."

Everyone loves a great "Feel good" story in sports .... unless they are supporters of the participant on the loosing side. For this story, upon reflection, even those supporters and players will recognize the achievement and allow the celebration to go on without rancor.

There was one of those wonderful "feel good" stories that happened in Charlotte friday night. I wasn't there. I was several hours away at the time.

I've never seen the team in question play.

I've never seen their opponent play.

I've never seen the field that they played on.

I don't know the names of any of the participants in the game.

I don't know the coaches.

How could it be a "feel good" game? For the first time in recent memory, Garinger won a baseball game. This isn't a mountainous achievement at most schools. It is at Garinger. Garinger --- a school that has, in the past, had to recruit a player from the softball team in order to have 9 players on the field. Garinger --- who, in years past, has been 10-runned in every single game they've played.

It's also Garinger --- who's athletes in baseball displayed the best sportsmanship in the city. Garinger --- who in ancient days was "THE PROGRAM" in baseball in the region. Garinger --- who after such lofty heights fell on the worst of times.

When I saw the box score in the paper, I stopped reading. I didn't want to know the actual score, I didn't want to see who the opponent was. I wanted the light to shine, in my mind, for just a minute on "Garinger".

Way to go guys!!!!!!!

The Observer is getting in on the act too and recognizing the accomplishments over there. They had a great article on the Wildcats, picking up their 2nd win of the season.

Garinger High's baseball team began this season with an eight-year losing streak.

That changed with two victories in six days.

The Wildcats beat Berry 10-7 in the opener, and proved it wasn't a fluke with a 12-2 victory against Gastonia Highland on Wednesday.

"The kids are happy, they've got it rolling," said coach Trey Staviski, 0-18 in his debut last year.

Garinger routinely had trouble filling a roster, or preventing games from being shortened by the 10-run rule the past few seasons. Renewed interest produced 30 for tryouts, and 18 are on varsity.

Garinger scored in every inning of the opener.

"You would have thought they'd won a World Series game with the hooting and hollering," Staviski said. "They wanted their pictures taken."

Alberto Turudo had six steals, including home once, and two hits against Berry. He also struck out five in two innings of relief. Turudo, whose brother plays in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor-league chain, moved from Mexico in November.

Center fielder Vince Gibbs had two hits, and Daniel Barrientos was the winning pitcher.

"The biggest thing is they never knew what it was like to taste victory," Staviski said. "Now it keeps them going. They're realistic. They know we'll take some lumps, and which games we'll be going after."

Barrientos (2-0), a senior lefthander, pitched a three-hitter and didn't allow an earned run against Highland. Garinger scored nine runs in the top of the seventh, led by Alex Tiggs (two hits) and Josh Roper (double).

"We're not the best baseball team or players, but we have good athletes," Staviski said. "I spent last year working with them, and this year I wanted to turn it around."

Staviski laughs when he recalled a prelude last year. West Mecklenburg had beaten Garinger 8-2, and Staviski lit into his team about their mistakes.

"Finally, one of them says, `Coach, that's the first time in three years we played seven innings.' "

I hope they continue in their winning ways the whole season! I know that they are the talk of the town on most ball fields...."did you hear about Garinger?"
