Chad seems to like em all, fast, slow and in between! Folks at East Rutherford are proud of what Chad continues to accomplish.

Yep...and I met his parents, too. What a great example of good people from East Rutherford.

    Randy Jones

So are you saying that Randy Jones couldn't get major league hitters out today?

What are you talking about? What made you come to that conclusion? Randy was a terrific pitcher.

Obviously, this thread has gotten off topic.

This has really been answered already, I think, but I go to so many Carolina games I thought I'd interject. The velocity wasn't really the reason for the hitting, so much as the location. Coming into the weekend, Bard had a 2.70 and Miller a 1.10, it isn't like they've been pounded -- and you could argue that they haven't faced a team that hits as well as Miami yet, but they way both of them pitched AT Miami last season shows that on, nobody touches them. Did anybody see a gun on Danford? I never sit over there, but he was really the most effective pitcher of the weekend, with 6+ nice innings yesterday.

Wear of the college season is fairly well-documented on guys out of high school, but none of this weekend's Carolina pitchers were freshman, so I'm not sure that applies. But I'm less expert than most of you, so.

    Velocity

Velocity is a function of mechanics and core strength. Velocity is gained during the off season through core strength/flexability training and must be maintained with in season training. Poor mechanics contribute to velocity loss and many times making a necessary correction in the delivery can restore the velocity as much as 3 to 5 mph depending on what corrections are needed. Many high school pitchers are still growing and will continue to gain strength and velocity as they continue to develop in college. The college season is longer and more demanding on pitchers than they are on high school pitchers and I would suspect a lack of core strength is one reason that some pitchers throw with less velocity in college than they did in high school. I agree with the earlier posts that suggest that velocity without movement is ineffective. In order for pitchers to be successful at the college level it seems that 1) location is the most important factor followed by, 2) movement, then 3) the ability to change speeds, 4) followed by velocity in that order. I'm not an expert, just an opinion.

An interesting note on Chad that relates to this topic. Often overlooked is the fact that Chad posted an incredible 27-2 record as a high school pitcher. (Despite barely pitching his senior year). I clocked him several times. He would touch 90 and consistently hit 86-89. I was watching him throw a bullpen one day at practice and noticed he threw all 2-seamers. When asked about throwing a 4-seamer, he told me he never did, just 2-seamers so he could get arm-side movement. The point is he probably could have lit up the guns a little better if he had wanted, but he felt he was more effective with the movement.
