Wilson Boyd slams a 2 run home run in the bottom of the 6th to lead Hickory to the come from behind victory. Justin Dickson and Greg Baker combined to pitch the 5 hitter for the Tornadoes. Josh Bowles pitched well for Alexander Central.

Hickory moves to 14-5 on the year while Alexander Central falls to 12-5.

This game was played at SW since they had to swap earlier in the season when SW had a wet field. That means Ragsdale has to play 6 of it's last 7 on the road, and the home game is against once beaten Eastern Randolph on May 3. That should be an awesome game. ER's lone defeat was to Ragsdale's other big rival Southwest Guilford who Ragsdale beat earlier this season and has only lost twice. SW is playing really well. That game is Monday night at Southwest.

Ragsdale is now 14-4 overall and in all alone in second place in the Tri-County at 7-2. The Tigers are getting great play from sophomores Caitlin Carter ( 4-0), Jason Wallace and Brent O'Berry. If they can keep hitting the ball like this and Mullins can keep throwing heat Ragsdale could make a run in the playoffs.


Ragsdale knocks off SWR

ASHEBORO -- Southwestern Randolph coach Chris Cook knows that his team can pitch and field the baseball, it's the offense that has been a question mark.

The Cougars are in the midst of a battle for a playoff spot in the Tri-County Conference race. As the team makes its second run through the TCC slate with games attaining more and more importance in the playoff chase, the wheels literally fell off Tuesday night.

Ragsdale pitcher Trevor Mullins shut down Southwestern's offense while all the areas that SWR was supposed to be strong at caved in as the Tigers pounded the Cougars in a 13-1 victory in five innings.

"Hopefully what's happened is we're staring to play well at the right time," said RHS coach Donnie Maness. "It was a good win for us."

The win keeps RHS within two games of league-leading Eastern Randolph -- 7-2 in the TCC, 14-4 overall -- and gives the Tigers some distance on SWR (5-4, 11-6) and the rest of the middle of the pack teams wrestling for one of the three playoff spots.


"This is as low as we can get I think. None of the phases of the game worked for us today," said Cook. "You're not going to beat any team when you do that. We're in some sort of stagnation right now. We've just got to pick ourselves up."

Ragsdale scored in every inning, had hits in every inning and gladly took advantage of the four SWR errors and the six walks given up by Cougars starter Chris Kennedy.

The Tigers sent 11 to the plate in the top of the third inning to put up six runs, giving RHS a 10-0 lead at that point, but even getting the score to where the game ended early was moot.

Mullins prevented any hopes of a comeback. The Cougars were held to four hits for the game and Mullins fanned five of the last seven batters he faced, including retiring the side on strikeouts in the fifth to end the game.


A one-out double by Chris Watson in the first was left stranded at third. A base hit in the second was erased with an inning-ending double play. Mullins finished with seven strikeouts total and no walks.

"Trevor looked as good tonight as I've seen him. He finally looked like he was comfortable," said Maness. "Tonight was the first time he looked like what I'm used to seeing him look like."

"They just kept coming. They were relentless. That's just a credit to them," added Cook. "(Mullins) pitched a good ball game. There is no question about it."

The lone SWR run came in the bottom of the third inning after Mullins fanned the first two hitters. Leadoff hitter Derek Funk singled to right field and took second on a passed ball. Then Chris Watson singled to left and Funk came in from second, but that just got the game inside the 10-run rule at 10-1.

A walk and two hits to start the game turned into the first three runs for the Tigers, one of them on a bases loaded walk. In the second, the first of four errors for SWR in the game plated a run to make it 4-0 just prior to the six-run third.

The big hit in that inning came off Jason Wallace's bat when he homered over the right field fence after Jake Kensmoe led off the third with a walk. Then Kennedy walked three straight batters -- including his second bases loaded walk to score a run -- to end his day on the mound.

The epitamy of the ball game came in the six-run third inning on a perfect bunt by Catlin Carter. The ball dropped right next to the first base line, rolling and then coming to a halt right next to it in fair territory -- with two SWR's Zack Hoover and Kennedy hovering over it.

"Three or four weeks ago, that ball went foul for us," said Maness. "We'll take it."

With the way the defense faltered, Ragsdale got all the breaks and SWR could not mount any offense, it was one of those days that nothing the Cougars did seemed to make anything good happen.

"I'm sure (players) were looking for a hole to crawl into, there just wasn't enough space in the dugout for all of us to get into," Cook said, managing a faint smile. "It wasn't effort. It's not like they're not trying. It's just it's not happening right now for whatever reason.

"We've got to keep fighting. This is a tough conference."

It would've been 3-0 but a certain fellow that we all know and love missed 3rd base on Jerrod Faggart's double (I'm not sure about that East Rowan lighting..............OOOOooooops! We won't go there----learned my lesson).

A great pitchers duel between Tuesday night's hard-luck loser,Nick Daniels (5 hit shut-out) and ER's curve-ball master, Craig Lyerly.

A real gutsy performance from Nick Daniels after pitching 2.2 innings in the hard-fought A.L.Brown/NWC marathon just two nights ago. Thanks Nick, we needed that one.

The Trojans try to avenge an earlier loss Tuesday night against conference leader West Rowan.

We had fun sitting with a motely crew of West Rowan players and coaches who were there scouting the game (WR basketball Coach Mike Gurley was nice enough to pay everyone's way in ). Anyway, they were all pumped up about tomorrow night's match-up with the hot A.L. Brown Wonders at Kannapolis. :apopcorn:

 

Broughton 7-4 over Wakefield

According to my sources, the Broughton Capitals pulled a big upset tonight over Wakefield High School by the score of 7-4. This comes a night after they beat N. Durham 10-4 and led by Stephen Halford's three home runs.

This was a well played game for the ROCKETS. We were able to play 7 complete innings tonight. Our kids played with alot of guts and heart!! Jerrod Moore (JR/RHP) pitched another strong performance, in his second start of the season, coming off a broken finger in his pitching hand. In 3 outings he is 1-1 with a 1.21 ERA with 19 K's and 4 BB's in 17.3 IP. He was dominant at times and his defense did not let him down as it did in his previous start. We executed on offense, made the plays when we needed them and got clutch hitting at the right times. I can not be any more proud of our guys than I am after this game. They came out and played the ay they are supposed to against a good Riverside team. We need to keep this up and not become complacent if we want to compete for the PAC-6 Championship. We have 3 conference games left, beginning with a tough Chapel Hill team next Wednesday night in Chapel Hill. Every conference game is a must win in this 5 team conference.

 

Person Rockets

I said it from day one Coach that you guys have the best pitching in that conference. Thats a very good win over a good Riverside team. A Riverside team that is well coached and has some good players. If you guys continue to play defense like you apparently did tonight you will have a great chance to win the PAC-6. Congrats on a big win and good luck the rest of the way. By the way I was at the State Games tryouts and I thought that both Byrd and Moore did very well.

South Granville visited Bunn High School for a big Northern Carolinas 2-A match up on Thursday night. Freshman RHP Pratt Maynard got the start for the Vikings and went 4 innings and allowed 2er. Soph RHP D.J. Scott got the start for Bunn and lasted three innings before being pulled. South Granville was led at the plate by Sr SS Todd Helmer who was 4-4 on the night. Helmer is 10-10 in his last 10abs and is hitting over .500 on the year. Freshman Catcher Jeff May was 2-3 with a solo HR and 1 single that scored 2 runs. Sr 2b Eric Campbell and So Chris Luck went yard as well. Joey Henn hit a 2run HR for Bunn in the third inning. So RHP Chris Luck came in and pitched the 5-6th innings allowing no hits no runs and 4ks for the Vikings. The game was stopped after 6 due to the 10 run rule. After the first time through the conference the Vikings has allowed 7 runs through 7 conference games 5 earned and have scored 102. South Granville moves to 13-3 7-0 on the year. South Granville will host Southern Vance Friday night in Creedmoor.
