FACTS!

1. Central only hit 2 innings in the game.
2. The score is a direct result of the discrepancy in the talent level of the two teams. Not only is Central one of top teams in North Carolina, but is currently ranked nationally. On the other hand, West Charlotte has very little talent, and their coaching staff does nothing to correct or teach the game. I realize that West Charlotte’s players have feelings and try to the very best of their God given abilities to play the game, but my players work hard to display their skills too. Central’s line-up has several Division 1 players and other players are capable of playing in college at a lower level.
Evidence of the examples in playing ability:
•West Charlotte made 15 errors. If you really count miscues on relay throw, the errors would reach well into the high 20’s.
•Central only “hit” the ball during the game. There were no drag bunts, delay steals, etc, were executed. I had the last batter bunt back to the pitcher to end the 2nd inning.
•We only stole 6 bases, all early in the 1st inning.
•We advanced on 4 passed balls. We scored 7 runs by the runner being forced home by the umpire after the ball deflected off of the catcher out of bounds. It was a difficult thing not to advance on passed balls. We work extremely hard on reading ball angles, so it becomes automatic that we advance upon reading the WP or Passed ball. At practice everyday, we teach the skill of reacting instinctively to misplays of the opposition. In fact, one of our players twisted her ankle reading the passed ball, then trying not to advance.
•West Charlotte’s players had numerous opportunities to get us out at 2nd, but the West Charlotte player (2nd Baseman) thought you only had to catch the ball and tag the base instead of tagging the runner.
•At least three times, the 1st baseman was thrown a ball on force plays and came off the base for no apparent reason.
•Central only had ten players dressed. All started and all played.
•We only batted for two innings. On average for the last 4 games against West Charlotte, we have scored 30 runs per game. We have only batted for two innings during the 3 of the 4 contests and three innings in the other.
•(2) West Charlotte hitters entered the batter’s box without helmets. On another occasion, the coach had to run the players out of the stands while they were eating and “having a great time”.
•After the 1st inning, I asked the West Charlotte coach if she just wanted to hit and us (Central) play defense, she did not respond. I asked her again after the 2inning and she agreed, but I did not tell my players. As soon as we struck the 3rd batter out, our players came running off the field and West Charlotte’s out of the dugout, so the game just ended.
•I had our hitter bunt the ball back to the pitcher for the last out.
I would have gladly stopped play after the 1st inning

I do not think Coach SHERRILL should be suspended for doing his job.If I was his employer I would give him a pay raise. I took my 8 year old daughter to his softball camp and observed SHERRIL and his staff and players. 100 PERCENT FIRST CLASS OPERATION. WHO WOULD NOT WANT THEIR DAUGHTER TO PLAY FOR HIM ? MY daughter and I was so impressed I signed her up for SHERRILL"S hitting camp this summer.

i see where you're going with this one and i do agree for the most part. i've seen many more instances where this logic could be applied in high school football though. where do we draw the line? i could see a "15 or 20 run rule at ANY TIME during the game" comming outta this. good call meckfan.

Just a thought

Has anyone ever suspended a football coach for running up score. Don't tell me West Charlotte wouldn't run up the score in football or basketball if they were able to.

Amen Mark, CC was defeated by close to 60 points by Harding girls earlier this year but i didnt hear any complaints

Why would any coach be suspended for a team playing their regular game...Coach Sherrill has a dominating team and it is not his place to tell his kids to get away from their regular game to keep from running up a score...Coach Sherrill did nothing wrong, it is up to the opposing team to get outs...not coachs job to tell the kids to strike out or step off a base early...it is not up to the NCHSAA to tell coachs when they can score and when they can't...The NCHSAA should suspend themselves for not treating baseball and softball as fairly as football and basketball..baseball and softball should be practiced and played in the fall season under the same rules as football and basketball in the spring, (football and basketball is over till next fall), spring is time for softball and baseball...

It seems now that the facts are starting to change everyones idea of exactly what happened. Sherrill informed me that ESPN has contacted him saying this was crazy (suspension). They have talked to him this morning.

Based on what unfortunately has happened to Coach Sherrill, Coach Beatty at West Forsyth, Coach Poindexter at Central davidson and Coach lambross at n Davidson all should be looking over their shoulders for a possible suspension. Their teams also have defeated much weaker teams this year by more than 20 runs and sometimes more than 40 runs.

OH NO! That just isn't fair, the poor kids who lost so badly are emotionally scarred and probably need more money given to their school so the adminstrators can correct the problem.

Quick, somebody call the waaaaaambulance, someone at west charlotte has gotten their feelings hurt! (and the NCHSAA is the waaaaambulace chaser!)

In the past, when the West Charlotte basketball and football teams (who consist of mostly black players) would beat a weak team into the ground (usually a team made up of a lot of white kids) no one EVER said a word. But NOW, the white girls beat up on a black team....that is sooooo not fair. I guess Jesse jackson will be in NC soon to straighten all this unfairness out!
