If I am reading the news correctly about the recent changes by the NCHSAA Board of Directors, I'm not sure one change was thought through long enough. The change will have a big impact on scheduling, make-up games, etc., as "overall winning percentage" becomes the determining factor for the extra playoff spots. If reported correctly, any conference with five or more teams would get a champion spot and one wild card spot, and then the extra spots would be filled by "teams with the best overall winning percentage from the various conferences."

OK, then, load my non-conference schedule up with games against Garinger, Berry Acadamy, Hunter Huss, West Charlotte, Waddell, etc., and forget the exciting non-conference match-ups between good teams from different conferences. Do you think North Meck and South Meck will want to continue to play the opener against one another? Coaches better scream about this one at the top of their lungs, or we will see a real downgrade in the non-conference schedules of our better teams.

I'm glad I'm not going to be around, trying to calculate the RPI for all these schools .... cause that's what it will take in order to not punish teams for playing a tough schedule.

    Today's Observer

In Langston's column on page 7C of today's Charlotte Observer. Actually, it is not just about baseball, but all high school sports where the playoff bracket has 32 teams. In 48 team brackets like football, the conferences get two wild cards, but then, according to the article, the other spots available are determined based on overall winning percentage.

I hope the article is wrong or I am mis-reading it.

Of course I think it was Thomas Jefferson who once said, and I am paraphrasing here, that he had "ceased reading all newspapers and found himself to be much better informed as a result..."
