Anyone see Gazette's 2005 coach of the year? Not having Rex Carns, who had a great year at Ashbrook, or Grayson at Kings Mountain who won the state and only lost 1 game, as coach of the year is the biggest joke of the year in the local sports sceen.(Not to mention who was chosen to receive the award) Forget the years that these 2 coaches had, Grayson and Gabby care about their programs, their players, and work really hard so their kids will be successful.

    coach of year

Cherryville coach won it, and I agree about gabby and grayson, but this is like opening a can of worms, in my book, KM coach should have won it hands down, she took a young team all the way through very hard work. congradulations to KM team.

Does anyone know how the Gazette choses this award? I was totally surprised that the KM coach did not win it. No seniors, 1 loss and a state championship in a pretty tough 3A conf. Cherryville played in a conf. with 2 other teams (N.Lincoln (1 win 3 losses against) and Maiden (2 wins against)). Look at the competition that the 2 teams played also. Cherryville wins because it has talent, not because of coaches. The coaches their practice around 1 1/2 hours and they practice JV and varsity together, 25 or so girls in that amout of time. Usually practice is 6-7 pitches off the pitching machine, a round of infield and go home. Every now and then they throw the Tee's out and let them hit a little off them a little. They pick up trash and rocks during practice also. The asst. misses a good amount of practice all together and the head coach left around 4:30 every Tues. and Thurs. to go to a class. This team was about 3 or 4 lucky bounces away from losing about 3 or 4 more games. I would like to see this award voted on by the area coaches and not the media. The coaches know who deserves awards like this. They play against each other and know about the others teams.

    All Gazette

    First of all...

Congrats to all who made all Gazette teams. Big shout out to "Mo C" from Kings Mtn. She had a fantastic year and certainly deserved POY and all other awards received this year.

    IMO...

It looks to me that this team isn't actually selected, but more just assembled. Almost all of the 1st team was pitchers & catchers. Pitchers will, just by being a pitcher, produce more stats than other positions.

If you look at the 2nd team and honorable mention, they consist of players that achieved a certain level of stats. Such as...a .300 batting average or hit at least 1 HR. It has a few of the private schools players thrown in for good measure. Some of the stats in the individual notes were either left out of the category listing or they didn't match (clumsy editing...).

The teams in which the players are on, are from the reading area of the Gazette or markets in which the Gazette wants to increase readership. I hope the latter doesn't take priority over the individual accomplishments of these young ladies..

I suggest the either of following...

    1) have 9 1st team All-Gazette, one for each position with 3 outfielders. Then 9 each for the 2nd team. At that point, players who are worthy of the tag should be placed on honorable mention. It would be a more accurate representation of softball in our area.

    ....or

    2) 2-3 1st team Pitchers, 2-3 catchers, 5-7 1st team infielders and 5-7 1st team outfielders.

I like idea #1 best. This would give every player on the field an equal shot at 1st team.

Phillip Gardner...hope you're reading this thread.

I will take the State Champ trophy any day over any Coach Of The Year award...

I agree but the two should go hand in hand.

I agree with GREENWAVE1. But CanAm might have hit the nail on the head from what players AND some parents from up C'ville way say. Its pretty bad. But don't want to turn into a bashing session. Thread is interesting to the opinions of others on this subject. And hope Phillip G. does read this. I do feel he does a good job. But fastpitch is growing so much and more and more people are finding out how exciting it is....it deserves more coverage in the area.

Back to the point.....a state championship, conference championship, POY on your team should get you coach of year. I'm sure Suzie got what she was after, but the efforts should have been rewarded by the local media. Its good that softball gets some coverage from the Gazette (sure don't get it from Observer in this area) and I'm sure everyone appreciates it, but come on lets be real here. Hey, Gabby gave KM all they wanted in the second round not to mention the excellent season his team had. To overlook these 2 individuals is just a little sad. But most folks in the inner circle know what kind of effort these 2 put into their programs and how hard they work to develope their young ladies as players as well as productive members of society. We applaud your efforts and heres to both of you.:trophy: :trophy: :trophy:
