Not sure if there is a inning limit pitched in high school, but the legion rule(12 innings in 72 hours) was in effect when I played legion ball....and that was in the early 70's.Really can't believe that coach Caldwell did not know this rule. Then again maybe he didn't think the four innings Keese pitched monday night counted since the game was rained out.But you would have thought he would have asked before pitching him 9 more innings on wednesday.

The rule book also states in 2 places, that if a game is to be protested, it has to be done before the last out of the game. ktown protested the game the day after..

Legion officials said Kannapolis had 12 hours to protest the pitcher pitching 13 innings in just 48 hours.12 hours after the game ended. And they did just that.....hate it for the Concord kids,it's a tough way to lose a game..and a series.

There is also a question of which set of rules that are being used. The commissioner referred to a set of rules that was different than those the teams had. I think Coach Caldwell thought the innings didn't count because of the rainout.

Forget the innings rule...What about child abuse?? That's what it is when a kid is permitted to pitch 13 innings in 48 hours. We are talking 200 pitches...in 48 hours.... Is the Keese kid a college prospect?? If so, his Legion coach may have just cost him a scholarship.

The damage done by overpictching (according to trainers) does not necessarily show up in the form of a torn cuff or blown elbow....Generally the damage to an arm is accumulative & results in loss of speed, control & movement on ball.
So next year if this kid gets jacked, remember the games in which he said "I want the ball" & the coach who handed it to him.

To Niner,,,, your right about the rulebook, but there is yet another type of appeal. Please don't act as if we are so stupid that we just go around doing things blindly. At least give us credit for checking it out before we did it. This decision was confirmed by the Area Commissioner, the State Commissioner and a National director. Concord has no appeal. Your coach simply made a mistake that he even admitted and I understand Concord folks are frustrated,,,, but he made a costly mistake.

Kannapolis begins Round 2 tonight against a very strong Stanly County team. It will be refreshing to hopefully get back to some good ole baseball...

MarkinConcord,,,,, rainouts don't count as far as hits, runs, etc.... But rainouts "DO" count whenever a pitcher takes the mound, and consequently his innings count. This rule is not about stats as much as it is there to protect the pitcher from being over-used.

This protest stuff reminds me of the West Forsyth home run. I just despise it when a team loses on a technicality. I have no criticism of K-town's decision, but it's not for me.

There is no joy in such victories...and not alot of honor either. If you doubt that, read the Salibury paper's autopsy of games 4 & 5. No surprises that it was UGLY both on & off the field. Sportsmanship evaporates when the back end of a rule book is consulted after a victory is in the books.
