Just to let everyone know,, Ashley Lawson, the area scout for the San Diego Padres, will be holding an open tryout Thurs. July, 14th at 11am in Morganton at Shuey Field. Other professional scouts and college coaches are sheduled to appear. All players wanting to try out just need to bring spikes and gloves. Wooden bats will be provided for use.
This is a great oppurtunity for exposure. Don't just use this as a chance to be signed that day. Mr. Lawson will be taking notes on underclassmen that attend for future looks. If you need anymore info... email Blaine Mull @ [email protected]. He is the legion coach for Burke Co. and an associate scout for the Padres.

FYI, any legion players whose team is currently still in the playoffs can not attend due to the dual part. rules. This only applies to the 18 players on the playoff roster.

Wrong! This is not considered dual participation you can still try out along as you have written permission from your athletic officer or head coach. This only applys to American Legion players.

After speaking with Area IV commissioner Bill Murray, I was correct about legion players still in the playoffs not being able to attend. This would violate the dual participation rule. Sorry if this causes anyone not to be able to attend, but the last thing I would want to see is a team disqualified due to a player attending a try out. Hope this clears things up.

what makes that dual participation? the try-out isnt a game or for that matter a competition. It's a one person at a time try-out basically..

if thats the case .. is it in violation to go to a batting cage where 2 scouts are attending ? just trying to see how far that rule applies...
it doesnt actually pertain to me at all. just curious.

I don't know what makes it dual participation. I mentioned the tryout to a couple of legion coaches and they said their players would attend if they were out of the playoffs,, but not if they were still playing becuase of the rule. So I call Bill Murray to clarify and he said that anyone still playing in the playoffs could not attend. I am not sure of the rule either......sounds crazy to me,,,but I don't want to see a team or players affected over this rule.

    Dual participation

Perhaps a tryout is considered a "combine"...

Here is what I found in the 2005 American Legion Baseball Rules:

    D. Dual Participation. During the regular season, American Legion Baseball players or teams may participate in other amateur baseball programs. The Team Manager and the player must obtain written approval from the Department Baseball Chairman, prior to participating in the event and/or tournament.

Clarification Dual participation shall in no way interfere with a player’s responsibility to his American Legion Baseball Team. Once tournament play has begun (District Tournament up and through American Legion World Series) the Department Baseball Chairman cannot grant permission to participate in non-Legion sanctioned tournaments, exhibition games, showcases or combines. The American Legion believes team loyalty is a key ingredient for any team sport. Any American Legion Baseball player missing any portion of an American Legion tournament, because that player participated in another non-sanctioned baseball event such as exhibition game, tournament, showcase, combine or other youth programs shall be ineligible for post-season tournament play.

I guess so.. but it doesnt seem right to stop a person from making a living. A try-out could lead to that.
I dont know.. i hate to see some of these rules .

What a stupid rule. No wonder kids don't play legion as much any more. Showcase ball is the way to go. They don't limit your exposure and at the showcase games there are lots more scouts than at a legion game anyway.
