Earlier today, former McDowell wing forward Emily Lovik signed an official letter of intent to play college basketball this fall at USC-Upstate, an NCAA Division II school near Spartanburg. Lovik helped lead the Lady Titans to a 104-11 record for the past 4 seasons, most notably, including 3 consecutive NW4A Championships, 3 trips to the Western Regionals, and an appearance in the 2004 State 4A title game where they lost to defending champions, Fayetteville 71st.

Lovik averaged 11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game, and shot 44.9 percent from the field and 42.0 percent from 3-point range. She finished her stellar varsity career with 1,154 points, 419 rebounds, 222 assists and 122 steals.

Lovik suffered a severe ankle injury late in the season, but returned to play limited minutes in the postseason. She underwent surgery on the ankle after the season, and has recovered well, according to her father, Lloyd.

Ironically enough, Lovik's first game as a member of the USCU Lady Spartans will be against Wingate, who signed McDowell co-captain Anna Atkinson earlier this summer. Whitney Mace, who signed with Montreat last week, joins Lovik and Atkinson as college bound Lady Titans.

Breaking news out of the Freedom camp..

According to sources within the team, starting forward Kristin Kidd has reportedly transferred to South Caldwell. Reasons are unknown why Kidd is making the jump from Morganton to Sawmills, but once word comes to my desk, I will pass it along. Tough break for the Lady Patriots.

Im completly shocked to hear this is true.I dont know the reasons and really dont care why.All i got to say how can someone do this to their friends and teammates and coach after coach fox has been there for her since the first time she came into the school.Coach Fox would always help Kristin work out and shoot whenever she wanted to.I thought they had a great relationship.I think this is nothing but selfishness and ego on behalf of kidd.Well freedom basketball was successful before she came and will be successful after shes gone.

Kidd's family must have move into the South Caldwell district or something because SC does not accept transfers because of the overcrowed conditions already there. I had heard she was going to South this year but don't know the reasons. If she is there with Hobbs could be a good year for the Lady Spartans

Actually, I think the situation may not hurt Freedom as much as you would lead to believe. The Kristen Kidd that played last year was bad to do a lot of things on her own, if you know what I mean. From what I hear, Freedom has a freshmen guard coming this year that will impress a lot of people around the NW4A. If this upcoming freshmen can break the Burke County middle school scoring record that as previously held by Kerri Gardin, then she must be good.

The addition of Kidd will definitely make South a better team. It may turn into a four team race for the top two spots in the conference.

    Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing well. I am a former coach and close personal friend of Kristin Kidd. Here is the reason that she transferred: Kristin’s Mom took a job watching a lady at her house in the South Calwell district, and this job would require her to be away from her two other younger children and a lot of lifting and time. She couldn’t do the job alone so she wasn’t going to take the job. But, Kristin knew that her family needed the money so she has taken over most of the job. This was an unbelievably hard decision for her to make, as I had talked with her many times about it. Ultimately what it came down to was putting her family first instead of her basketball career. She wasn’t mad at Coach Fox, she loved her, and she wasn’t being selfish, because lets be honest who would want to leave their school and friends for their senior year. I don’t know if I would have done the same thing when I was her age. And, as far as trying to be the star, if that’s why you all think she left you obviously don’t know her. She hates being the center of attention and when people tell her she’s the star, she will always tell you it’s not 1 on 5. I’ve been coaching a long time and I’ve never coached a harder working or more unselfish player. Also, notice that these people aren’t her teammates on here calling her a glory hog or a selfish player; it’s the fans of a program that will suffer greatly from her absence! Hope that you all can now see and better understand the situation, and I sincerely hope that all of the people berating Kristin and her parents for trying to make ends meet realize how wrong they are about her and her family! Can’t wait to watch you light it up in college Kristin!!:)

    MVC,

Welcome to the boards and thanks for the news on Kristin Kidd. I've been watching her since her days playing varsity basketball at Tabernacle Christian School in Hickory (while in middle school) and knew she would be a great player.

Now that we got word about it, let it go. Congrats to South Caldwell, you are now officially contenders.
