Your right; Some of the states where softball is bigger than here the better players play only travelball and not highschool ball. Better all around competition and usually better coaching plus they aren't controlled by state associations who are out of touch with the needs of the players;ie dead periods for some of the teams and their coaches (stupid rule). Plus this is where they are seen by college coaches and get schalorships. In these states high school ball is more like rec ball and mostly played by the seasonal players. That is sort of what the nchsaa wants our players to be (seasonal) that is why they have these ridiculos dead periods so they will try to play other sports. The way I see it if they want to play another sport they will anyway and don't punish the ones who don't by making the wait a whole month twice a year to practice and play with their school coaches.

    secondary?

central-d: I was just trying to figure what you meant by "If they do play in school it will be secondary to travelball". If they choose to play travelball instead of school ball, I understand that; but if they play both , what would the girl actually do that would make sch. ball secondary to travel?

Most highschool coaches will not allow their players to play travel ball during the highschool season, some enforce this with instant termination. It's not a matter of jealously, its a matter of these players are often the core of their softball team, and injury will cause caos on the highschool team. I coach both travel and school, and it's often two sides of the coin. Highschool you have what you have, no recruiting, you learn to make the best with what you have. travel is travel, you know the story there. So, if this "girl" commited to our highschool team and missed a scheduled session of highschool ball for travel ball, be it game or practice, we would part company asap. It may come to pass someday that travel will replace highschool, but I dont think I'll see it in my lifetime. Not everyone follows Calif or Ariz. The system seems to be working fine here, girls get recruited, and it seems to come down to a question of when do we want to face the cold weather, the beginning of the season or the end? I personally would rather finish with the warm weather, and be tuned up for travel ball.

Lets see. Start playing travel ball in February. Play games all spring and summer until school starts in late August. Play school ball until early November. That would be essentially 9-10 months of games. Then take the months of December and January off when it’s impossible to do anything outdoors.

You’re missing something folks. The better high school programs do something very important for players during the fall. They rehabilitate injuries received during summer ball and work on improving technique in an environment of low stress. Any knowledgeable coach knows it is very difficult for players, especially batters and pitchers, to correct mechanical flaws during an active season. Yes, even your best players need to work on technique.

Players NEED off season time to recover, improve, and above all, avoid burn out. Major Leaguers don’t play 10 months per year, should teenagers?

Many good softball players enjoy spending their off seasons playing other sports.

THE 1ST POST SAID TO HAVE SOFTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL AT THE SAME TIME. I CAN SEE THE PROS AND CONS FOR THIS , WE PLAY IN BOONE IN LATE APRIL AND WE STILL HAVE TO DRESS LIKE ITS FEB!!! 1 THING I WANT TO THROW OUT THERE IS, I MEET A COACH AT OUR CLINIC IN GREENSBORO THAT IS FROM DOWN EAST, HER SCHOOL ONLY HAS 650 STUDENTS TOTAL!!! THERES NO WAY TO FIELD A SOFTBALL AND A VOLLEYBALL TEAM AT THE SAME TIME WHEN YOU HAVE THAT SMALL AMOUNT OF KIDS.

If you simply switch softball and volleyball, you wouldn't have to choose between the two sports. They would be offered in opposite seasons.
