    I was at the game and actually talked to the scouts from Wilkes when they were lookin at Morton. Nothing against Wilkes CC, but it's good to see a kid who was good but played in a horrible program have success. Congrats to him.

    Coach Smith & Anderson & Stone were elated to nab Andrew...& not just because of his pitching prowess. Let me share a few anecdotes:

    ...I had the opportunity to see Andrew's transcripts, & I am confident he won't mind me saying: He is a legitimate "A" student in high school (4.4 GPA). His SAT was strong as well. His #1 interest is marine biology. (How in the heck does a kid from Lexington become interested in marine biology???)

    ...Last year Andrew attended Wilkes CC in order to play baseball, but financial constraints forced him to drop off the team & work full time to support himself. So he was up there in Wilkesboro unsupervised by his parents, living in an apartment with 3 other guys, still attending classes, working his butt off, & no baseball to play. Sounds like a sure-fire formula for bad behavior & beer parties, right?? Not Andrew. He's not into that. Instead he went to work everyday, stayed disciplined & still made straight "A's".

    ...On Legion trips, Jim Lippard told me that Andrew often carried his Bible on the bus trips.

    ...I called his guidance counselor at Lexington HS to check on a couple of things, & she teared up talking about what a great kid he is.

    ...Often when one of his fielders failed to make a tough play, Andrew would walk in their direction & say: "My bad...I grooved that pitch..."

    ...Immediately after the last game in Cherryville against Pitt Co, the team & coaches & parents were all standing on the field hugging & trying to console each other. I looked over to the dugout & spotted one kid...Mort...with a bucket in his hand cleaning the dugout. Large bucket...3 loads of trash. No one asked him to do that, but that's Andrew in a nutshell. There was a job to be done, & our star was doing garbage detail.

    Do you understand now why several people in Lexington have voluntarily pooled resources to help Mort attend college & play baseball? Why are they doing this? Because they love this kid. So do I.

    I tip my hat to all of you who put in a good word for Andrew to scouts around the area. Your efforts paid dividends toward generating the interest that led to scholarship offers. This is a great story that has a happy ending just waiting to be written. I'm looking forward to reading that chapter.

    This story is so good at so many levels. I have always believed there is a reason behind everything that happens....and in Andrews case, I feel it was predestined that he would end up at Belmont Abbey. I was cheering and hoping this is where he would go.

    Congratulations to Coach Smith, Anderson and Stone for signing such a quality young man as they continue to make strong strides in their goal to win their Conference Championship.

    Wow!!!! :woohoo: :jump::banana:

    I liked this quote from Andrew about his future role at Belmont-Abbey. It's a simple concept that all young people should know and strive for... To "earn what you are given". Good luck to Andrew next year. He's definitely got his feet planted firmly on the ground.

    UK7Dook3 - Thanks for your background information about Andrew during the last several weeks. More than anyone you helped make a lot of people aware of Andrew and his situation. Keep us informed of Andrew's progress at Belmont-Abbey. (Tyler's too!)

    Congrats Andrew!!!!

    Gosh what a great story - I'm so sick and tired of the T.O. reporting hearing something like this just puts the world back in perspective.

    Good luck Andrew at Belmont Abbey!!!

    I've read this thread from start to finish, and I just love a good ending. Or should that be beginning? Well done Andrew - and to all the people that supported him on gaining this much deserved scholarship. I don't know much about Preps or Baseball - but I know a great story of perseverance, commitment and talent when I see one :).

    Thank you Braves for the direction to this brilliant thread...as always - you rock! ;).
