Off season trivia:

Does anyone know what type of jet that Ted Williams flew during the Korean conflict. Or any other pertinent information?

yes Ted Williams was in the VMF fighter marine squadron 311, but there were actually two types of jets he flew over in Korea.

The first was a Corsair and then he trained on a Navy supplied jet. They often sent jets over to the marines after they were done with them.

 

I was hoping there may be a few tbr's that had an interest in aviation.

Apparently, (and this is from a personal and credible source), Ted Williams trained at El Toro base in California. Though he flew Corsairs at the beginning of his tenure, he was trained by VMF 235 squadron to fly the F9F Panther Jet which he flew over in Korea.

He had already been successful in his MLB career, and returned to playing ball after his tour of duty was completed. There was also another ball player that he hung out with during his training at El Toro, Jerry Coleman. I personally have never heard of him, but he was a flier as well.

F9F's were flown by the Navy and Marines during the Korean War. Since the Marine Corps is part of the Navy Dept., they fly the sme aircraft, unless either the MArines or Navy needs a certain aircraft for specific missions.

 

For a little Ted Williams's trivia, as Ted returned to baseball from flying, who was the "blooper" pitcher that Ted hit his 2nd home run off of in the 1946 All-Star game. A day in which he had 2 homers, 2 singles and 5 rbi.

I thought this was interesting:

In 1942 Williams hit .406 but lost out to DiMaggio as MVP
In 1943 Williams won the Triple Crown and lost out to another player
In 1947 Williams won the Triple Crown again and lost out by 1 vote...who did he lose out to?


I can understand why he didn't like the sportswriters

Again, Joe DiMaggio. But he did win in 1946 and 1949.
