I have also heard of this new league. One coach I talked to last legion season said he would probably participate in this new league because he did not get any help from the American Legion Post in terms of money.

This is just a small way for high schools to ruin legion baseball. High school coaches want their players to play together all year long but its against a lack of competition because all the good players know that legion baseball is the best oppurtunity to get noticed by college scouts. It will also take away the knowledge that another coach can bring to that young person.

Sounds like a great opportunity to me to get more kids playing. Isn't that what it is all about? If 10 high schools are involved at 15 kids per school that is 150 kids playing. If those same 10 schools are feeding 2 legion teams that is 36 kids playing. These kids can still do showcases (can't do it if you are playing legion) to get noticed. Seems like a great opportunity to me. Can you blame the local high school coaches for wanting to get as many of their players playing summer ball as possible to make their programs stronger? I can't.

To my knowlege it is to be a developmental league in the Triangle area. I know Spacedawg could help us with information about this league, as I am sure he is "in the know" on this one. Good idea to ge tmore kids playing good ball with good coaches.

There is a league being formed mainly south of the Triangle area. Fuquay and Lee Senior were the major contributors in this attempt to have a summer high school baseball league. There are about 16 schools that have committed. Of these schools most are from southern Wake County, Johnston County, Harnett County and Lee County. One school in Chatham County and the two Chapel Hill schools are included. There are about 6-7 other schools trying to enter the league.

The idea is not to hurt legion programs necessarliy, but to make them stronger. True, weaker legion teams that draw from one or two schools and have unstable financial backing may fold. However, seniors and the best underclassmen from those folded teams would be encouraged to try out for the nearest legion team, perhaps making it stronger. Those who did not make the legion team could play on the high school team. There is a group of players out there, who are to old for Jr. Legion but not be quite good enough for a strong Sr. Legion team, they need a place to play.

Summer high school leagues are common in some states.

More info may be known after the NCBCA meeting in Charlotte.

BTTT. Any updates on this topic? I personally think it's a great idea and could co-exist with legion quite nicely. From personal experience, it would certainly make roster selection for legion a much less painful task, knowing the kids had another place to go and play.

My biggest concern is I wonder if a high school coach would prefer his players play on his school team thus pressuring them (so to speak) to not play legion or select.

BTW, great site you have. I've enjoyed lurking.

Thats the problem I would have. With legion baseball its for the best of the best. Then you have Junior Legion which is getting very popular is meant for those players that can not play at the level of big legion but eventually will. With 18 players per team how will a high school team during the summer fill a team with vacations and work. If the kids are not good enough to make a legion team and you have enough for a high school team play that or big league. But High School coachs should not tell their players to shy away from legion because thats a highly competitive league that players can continuely play the best.
