Lenoir-Rhyne Wins Tourney Title over UNCP
    March 19, 2006
Spartanburg, SC - Lenoir-Rhyne hit three home runs, two by Brooke Starnes, to claim a 9-1 victory over UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the South Carolina Fast Pitch Classic at the 295 Sports Complex.
Lenoir-Rhyne entered the single elimination portion of the tournament as the No. 8 seed and proceeded to knock off No. 9 West Virginia Wesleyan, No. 1 Columbus State, and No. 4 Tusculum en route to the championship game. UNC Pembroke was the No. 10 seed entering single elimination and defeated No. 7 Lander, No. 2 Presbyterian, and No. 6 Alderson Broaddus to get to the title contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne used a five-run second inning to take control of the championship game. With runners on second and third with one out, Kelly White singled up the middle to drive in Kim Crowley to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Jessica Luper then drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Taylor Queen then hammered a shot over the fence in left field for a three-run homer and Lenoir-Rhyne took a 5-0 lead.
Lenoir-Rhyne pushed the lead to 7-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Starnes. After UNC Pembroke cut into the lead with a run in the fifth inning, Starnes ended the game with a two-run shot to right center to give the Bears a 9-1 lead and the tournament championship.
Casey Hanes went the distance, giving up three hits and on unearned run to earn the victory. She also struck out seven along the way. Laura Goldstein took the loss for the Braves.
