    Ain't gonna happen

leaving a girls name off the line up card who's sitting in the dugout is one thing, but you can't pull someone off the bleachers to play. Don't you have to be there at the beginning of the game???

    from the crowd?

Yes that does sound wrong, but not in the context you mention. If a proper coach had any intention, even remotely, that they would use a certain player as a pinch-hitter...............then that player would not be sitting in the stands ; she would be instructed prior to the game to be in the dugout with the team. It would not be optional. If they're in the stands, then they should not be put in a game. The stands are for the fans; the dugout is for players.

First off I never said I agreed with the rule. Matter of fact I think it is a bunch of junk. I think if the girl is not listed on the lineup card then she should in no way be allowed to enter the game. With that said I am just telling you what the rule book says. NOW I would say many umps (Although some I have seen may not) would not allow a girl to enter the game unless she was in the proper uniform or equipment. But according to the Rules if your JV team was sitting in the stands and you needed a runner and that JV girl had not used up her games then YES she can be entered into the game. THE RULE SUCKS I KNOW BUT TRUST ME IT CAN BE DONE CAUSE IT HAPPENED TO US, WE ASKED THE UMP ABOUT IT AND HE SAID SHE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ON THE LINEUP CARD. And if you want to get technical the only person that has to receive a lineup card is the ump. YOU technically only give the other team a lineup card for courtesy reasons. IT IS NOT REQUIRED. IF YOU WANT TO READ THE RULE FIND THE RULE BOOK AND LOOK UP PLAYER ELIGIBILITY.......

Cheeze -- At the very next game I asked the ump about leaving a girl off the lineup card and this was his response. IF you have a girl show up half way through the game that you didn't know was going to be there. Even if she is not listed on the lineup card she can go in the game RIGHT THEN. I don't know like I said I think the rule stinks but we have to deal with it.

    not disputing it

I don't doubt anything you've said, especially coming from an umpire. All I can say is in our conference, it won't happen, BUT . . . . anything, and I mean anything can happen when it comes to umpiring and their understanding of the rules. it often doesnt follow what i've been taught, seen, told, or learned through the years. just got to go with it until you can prove them wrong, and most often that will only be after the fact.

    ??

Regardless of the rule, still say that the coach should pre-plan well enough such that any & all players (including subs, JV's , whatever) that they would have even a remote chance of needing in any capacity during a game.....would be in the dugout, not in the bleachers.

a girl that comes in late to a game (as long as that tardiness was cleared with coach prior to the game or it was a legitimate emergency), then that's different & understandable to be inserted upon arrival.

I have learned that umps will make explanations to suit their call or ruling, AND change the explanation 2 or 3 times to make their call or ruling fit. :banginghe

much like our game against southpoint tonight, ump blew call in first, called run back and basically spoke a foreign language after that

    Substitutes

In the Federation rules, subs should be listed on the lineup card, but if for some reason they are not and the girls shows up and is placed in the game, there is no penalty. The only rules that require all subs to be listed is in college. There, if you are not listed on the lineup card, whether by choice or by accident, that player is ineligible for that game. And if a player appears on the lineup card for whatever reason, it does count against the number of games that she can play in that week.

    Umpires

I would ask that you please not lump ALL umpires into the classification of making up explanations of rules to suit their particular situation. Granted that at the High school level, the softball umpires lack a lot to be desired, but I blame Bill Freeman for that and all of the other booking agents that do not require proper training of officials to work games. I have been a collegiate official for 30 years now, I train softball officials for the Division I, II and II college levels. I also coach at a high school, this makes it tough to watch, but at this point, until enough people voice their complaints with the state, we just have to live with it.
