I've been called off-base for my claim that "current" McDowell boys' coach, Lloyd Church, has had at least four seasons where he was .500 or below and in a one season was only one win above .500. I got this list from Marty Queen at The McDowell News, so the numbers don't lie.

    1997-1998: 13-13
    1998-1999: 13-15
    1999-2000: 12-15
    2000-2001: 10-17
    2001-2002: 12-11
    2002-2003: 16-11
    2003-2004: 18-9
    2004-2005: 15-12
    2005-2006: 16-12

Again, a pattern of futility to mediocrity at very best. If you still call me off-base, you're a moron. And if he's still left at this position, this will continue.

I'm confused as to how 4 straight winning seasons + a conference championship is "futility and mediocrity?"

    Confused also

I count 5 straight winning seasons - I would imagine if you asked any HS coach that does not get to recruit his own players and has to play with the hand he is dealt - they would tell you 5 straight winning seasons is more then they would ever ask for. Throw in a conference championship and many might even consider that the quality of a "good" coach. Many might even consider it "Moronic" to want to get rid of a coach who has that kind of record (if we are only measuring his sucess by wins and losses that is).

I would imagine that personal animosity (such as the kind that Tarheel42 obviously holds) is much more of a factor in this situation than wins and losses.

Then again, maybe people in the NW4A just have unreasonable expectations. 3 coaches in the conference have already left, coupled with Coach Church's situation-it's definitely interesting.

I believe that so many coaches in the NW4A are leaving because they are afraid that Reynolds is going to start doing in basketball what they have done in football and own the league. The Rockets won the regular season conference championship this past season and split it last year. All these coaches are just running scared.

I have no issues. I just want to see the McDowell program restored to the days of its glory years. Its going downhill and Church is driving it towards the ground.

Four straight seasons of 10+ losses, along with being a meager 4 games above average. A conference tournament championship that was won when the top team went down, a la 2001... But it didnt result in anything...except another first round knockout in the State Playoffs.

    From the horses mouth

I spoke with an administrator at McDowell High School today who was furious at the article posted in the McDowell News. The administrator told me that Lloyd Church presented Principal Ben Talbert with a letter of resignation. Talbert reviewed the letter and told Lloyd that he felt his reasoning was extremely weak and that he would NOT accept it, nor would he take it to the school board. I guess time will tell...I take no stock in the McDowell Excuse.

Well, know this...I spoke with Marty Queen of "The Excuse" and he told me with all the things surfacing about a possible change at the helm, that he figured he'd get the facts at the time he filed that report, and let it be known what they were at the time.

Gosh, I hope all the things you're posting about this is true.
