On to something different!! For all you umpires and dugout umpires, you make the call on the following:

    bases loaded, no outs

batter hits a screamer off of 2nd basemans glove hitting runner going to 2nd base

runner from third scores, runner from second rounds third and sees plate umpire standing 5 feet in front of home yelling "dead ball". runner goes around plate umpire and scores. (plate umpire never saw runner touch home or be tagged by catcher, however, field umpire saw runner score).

Do both runs score or ??????

YOU MAKE THE CALL and later, I'll tell you the results.

Good play and weird at the same time.....

First runner scores... as soon as the plate umpire yells "Dead Ball!!". the play should stop, but don't think he should have said that. It is dead if it hits the runner BEFORE a fielder has a chance to make a play. Since the 2nd baseman made a play the ball is live (it has been sometime since I umpired but I believe that is the rule). Play should have continued and allow the other runner rounding third to advance at their own peril.

    How close am I????:1peekdoor

They probably put the runner back at 3rd and called the runner going to 2nd out...right?????

Maybe we can get a video on this from someone? A center field view, complete with commentary and signals.

    Low blow but excellent timing

Ok Outlaw, nice one. Here's what happened, home plate ump thought that the ball hit the runner period, she was corrected by the field ump. first run was allowed to score. second run was sent back to third because: a) the ump didnt see her touch the plate and b) the opposing coach stated that the catcher tagged her out (the ump didnt see that either). so we were given a choice, either go back to third or runner out ???????? (ump did admit that she blew the call). This was the play that cost us the game. We need better training for our highschool umps and I believe they all need to be certified. what ya think???

Both runs count. No arguing out of it.
He/she obviously didn't think the ball hit the trailing runner or he/she would have called that runner out.
Unless the ump calls the trailing runner out from being hit by a hit ball, the tariling runner may advance at their own risk/judgement.
I, unlike others, do not have a clue what game this involves but there is definately some bad decision making by the umps in that game from what has been told here.

    Great question

But here's the real truth and answer. First, by rule the ball should have stayed alive because the infielder had an opportunity to play the ball prior to the ball contacting the runner, unless in the umpire's opinion another defensive player could have made a play. That being said, from what I read, the plate umpire called the ball dead prior to the runner crossing the plate, right or wrong, she killed the ball and that particular runner would have to return to the last base legally touch prior to the umpire's mistake. As I have stated in a thread, we need to demand that these officials get the proper training they need to perform their duties. They are getting good money to be there and it's a disgrace to the sport and our daughters to allow these so-called officials to affect the outcome of games.

1st runner scores & the second must go back to third because once an umpire yells dead ball everthing stops there. It does not matter if she was tagged or if she scored. Once a dead ball is called everything is over there. Something needs to be done about these crappy umps!!!!!
