well, to get over 125 + AB's and plenty of time in the game. Playing summer collegiate baseball is great if there is a slot that will allow a nineteen year old to get enough playing time to amount to a descent summer, but its very hard to beat getting 4-5 AB's every night, six days a week over the summer and 9 innings a night in the field which seems alot more beneficial.

Also depends on where you play, quality of ball, etc. The quality of baseball in that area has to factor in to the decision along with fan support and just what you would rather enjoy doing. If a kid does not want to play collegiate baseball his freshman year it won't hurt him at all and is probably the best way to go if he is on a credible legion team playing in a good area.

    yes, be "da man"

yes and to take a shot at being the "star" coming back home , put up big #'s, be "da man" , get lots and lots of PT, etc. I always thought it looked sort of "good" for the team in the pre-season predictions to have a returnee or two from the college ranks. AND HECK, don't forget it's a lot cheaper to live at home in the summer than to pay rent somewhere out of town on a collegiate summer team.

    No Brainer

It is a no brainer when it comes to a program like Caldwell County Post 29, Cherryville, Rowan, etc......if you are for real, thats where you play.

Some parents try to push their kid out of town to play unadmittedly afraid that the competition at home is too stiff and they will be embarrased if "Johnny" doesn't stack up. Playing out of town they preach puts him in the view of scouts...but its often about being "out of the view" of the passionate home crowd and backing down from the challenge of representing the name on your chest...........if they don't stack up playing out of town, the parents can just make up whatever story they want to tell...........and who cares?

Downsouth is so on target. Legion ball (especailly in Caldwell) is about the player who loves his team and his community and is willing to spill his blood, sweat and tears for the name on his chest. Thats character. He takes the chance to become a hometown hero who will make memories and be remembered for years for his contributions to his team.

Another thing arising in some of the "Legion strongholds" like Caldwell, Shelby, etc. are ego problems. Some "wannabe" coaches (actually ego maniacs) become jealous of the Legion program and try to influence players elsewhere...sayings it's best for the player, when it is really to weaken the Legion team. Even some high school coaches have been guilty of worrying that the Legion program overshadows their program.

How do I get my information....how do I know this.....My son went through it.

Like Downsouth was describing about Strikeoutking, my son was often replaced by a DH in high school as a senior, but after a couple weeks of Legion instruction at Post 29 and Coach Hamby pouring the confidence in him, he ended up an offensive team leader on Post 29 in Home Runs, Batting Average and RBIs.

He was told during high school by some of these "wannabes" that he needed to go to Charlotte and play in the summer because a college coach would fall in love with his defensive game and there he could learn to be a better hitter.........well playing for the 29ers got those very results.

Coach Hamby found him a great college deal and he had a great college career and one reason I sit here writing is that we have seen it first hand.

As Coach Hamby always told his teams, "What destroys something great and successful usually comes from the inside." It is those who despise the success of their brother who plot his demise.

Caldwell players are born to take the challenge not run from it.
