    Clayton claims 18-inning victory
    Comets win Greater Neuse 4-A softball tournament

    Clayton outlasted West Johnston 4-3 in 18 innings to win the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference softball tournament championship game Saturday afternoon at Smithfield Community Park.
    The win gives the Comets the No . 1 seed for the upcoming state playoffs. They will host the Tri-Seven Conference runner-up, Apex, in a first-round game next week. West, which shared the regular-season league title with Clayton and beat the Comets last week, will travel to meet the Cap Seven Conference champ for its opening-round playoff game.
    Saturday's four-hour and 35-minute battle was tied 1-1 through 14 innings of play until Kasie Moore doubled home two runs for the Comets in the top of the 15th. But a two-out Clayton throwing error allowed two Wildcats runs to score in the bottom half of the inning. Comets' catcher Molly Muncert, who was 7-for-9 with a home run in Clayton's two games on Saturday, singled in the top of the 18th. Clayton courtesy runner Ashlyn Joyner, running for Muncert, later scored the game-winning run.
