Bumgarner is a real talent. Rare indeed. He is a special player and an even more special person. The kind of player colleges and pros love. The great thing is he is all about his team, not about himself. Although he is obviously so talented and special, he plays for the name on the front of his jersey (South Caldwell and Post 29 to be exact) and not for himself. That's greatness!
Not a selfish bone in his body. No big head. He is all about his teammates.

    Legion

I hope Poovey takes note. Being a team player is what helps make a great player. The scouts will find you and the great summer with your county teammates can't be underestimated. I'm sure that is part of the reason Bumgarner chooses legion. The summer with all of your best friends is by far memories you will always cherish that you also can't get back instead of paying to play ball in Charlotte and travelling all summer. The support from Caldwell County fans is also tremendous, but he has to make his own choice. It would also help if he plans on vying for a state championship next year in high school ball. It makes you a better team player and you aren't overshadowed by other players like in showcase. Just a thought.

    overshadowed?

On a high school team or Legion team, a player is more likely to be overshadowed than on a showcase team! On a showcase team, if you have the talent, everyone sees, whereas on a local team you have to think about returning players, etc. that gets in the way of everything. And as far as people coming to see? Why would scouts travel to Granite Falls to see someone play when they could go to a tournament to see 20 players of the same caliber? Scouting isn't like it used to be. I believe Poovey has talked to several scouts and college coaches and they all seem to be pleased with his decision! Enough of this crap, this doesn't even belong in this thread, it is a topic of the past..

A real player isn't worried about being overshadowed. A
real player plays for his or her team and accepts the challenge of possibly being overshadowed. Takes guts to be a team player and to care about your community and teammates.

Its a personal choice for each kid and family. Not for anyone in the community to get bent out of shape over if a kid decides not to play legion. There are very good reasons for a talented kid to play showcase ball. I agree that legion ball probably lends itself to more memories, but so would traveling the country or hanging out at the beach in the summer instead of working out. Doesn't make it the right choice.

No doubt Justin Poovey is a wonderful young man and a
    great talent.

He should feel good that so many Caldwell County fans want him to play for their beloved 29ers this season. His teammates would love to have him by their side, and the fans would love get to see him play and cheer him on.........but it is his decision.

I saw Coach Hamby today and asked him about it, and he told me that he respected Justin Poovey and his family and would support him whatever he did. He said all the fans should as well. It was amazing he just kept complimenting Justin.

Made me think about it a lot and all I have to say is good luck to him, and Justin we would love to have you playing here

    bumgarner

why do scouts bother coming to high school games if they can just wait and see showcase ball in the summer? bumgarner is the best pitching prospect i've ever seen. he could be playing in timbuktu for chico's bail bonds and the scouts will still be there. nobody is too good to play for their hometown team.
