slap or bunt?

saw a play where the (lefthanded batting) girl had been attempting to slap a hit to the left side, but fouled the first 2 pitches. then on the 3rd strike she again attempted a slap but it was more in a manner that resembled a "drag bunt" effort that she was going to try to outrun to first; it was also fouled on the ground slowly down the 3rd base side much like a bunt.

could this have been called a foul bunt on the 3rd strike & thus the batter is out? this call was not made.

and how do the good slappers get away with not having being "out of the batters box" called on those slap hits? I know it's a popular & effective technique in the fastpitch game; has the "slap" been made sort of exempt from being out of the batters box by common consent?

This goes back to what we have said on other threads, that until we get trained, competent people officiating games, these types of incidents will continue to occur. Maybe we all need to join together as one and petition the state to make a change. Umpires like that idiot Larry Norton are ruining the game for the girls. This guy has already been banned from young girls basketball leagues for inappropriate comments. But yet he is in the Varsity level calling games. Talk about an ego, he has the biggest. And is probably the least knowledgable person on where he needs to be to make calls. He spends more time trying to look cool, and be seen, than he does learning the sport and what he really needs to be doing.

Saw it yesterday in a high school game........was she slapping or dragging ??
the definition of slap hitting the wrist must be broken to be considered a slap hit .....if the wrist are straight it is a drag bunt,and a foul ball on last strike is out..........umpires discretion on the call........could become more of a gray area the more slap hitters that come to the plate....Softball Guru...

 

Solution to slappers

My daughter played a team in OK, that was loaded with slappers. Her coach new it and told the upire that she throws about a 35mph change up (almost like a slow pitch) and asked if he would keep an eye on the batters feet. Every one of the girls were a good two feet out of the box by the time they made contact with the bat and the ump rang them up. Made the other team hot, but she kept them off balance with her extreme difference in pitch speeds.

Met the team again in another tourney with a different ump and he refused to make the call . . . even with the line kicked out, it didn't take a rocket scientest to see their feet were further than 3 feet from the front of the plate when they made contact with the ball - heck, their back foot was almost out of the box.

It's all about training. . . .
