North Carolina has a great deal of talent across the state and to pick out a small group of kids as the best is no small challenge. However, I do have an issue with the fact that many coaches take a player from there own school even if the kid has no business on the team. When my son played, there were a couple of players on the team that made the team simply because their HS coach was a coach for our Region. I think this practice only creates more discussions around bias in the selection process.

The past few years they didn't post the rosters until the Games started. If I remember correctly, most of the rosters were posted here before the games.

Then again, since Impact sponsors the games, Andy may post it on their website

Until someone can institute a better system(if there is one) for choosing participants we have to go with what we have. My son's chances of making the team as a soph. are probably slim, but I know that the head coach of Region 3 has called coaches about kids ,and done his homework as to who he will choose. If a HS Coach volunteers to coach a regional team, then he dang sure deserves to put players on the team, especially his own, with which he thinks he can win.

I respectfully disagree - the "State Games" are about the players and not the coaches. It is an honor to coach one of the teams and that should be enough motivation. Every attempt should be made to place the best players and if a coach puts one of his players on the team when it is not warranted, it diminishes the process.

The "Junior Games" offer local players more regional exposure than they will get from any showcase or travel team. Good players will be left off the rosters and this does not mean that they are not very good players. It is simply boils down to opinions and numbers. Coaches opinions and a limited number of spots on each roster.

I also disagree with SoutherNo1. It's that kind of "homer" thinking that should be eliminated.

If all other factors are equal and my player was tied with the other 2-3 players, then I would select my own player, and I think other coaches would too.

When I coached the state games, when it came time to evaluate my players, the other coaches evaluated them. We as a staff did not evaluate our won players to keep it above board.

Spacedawg was right... when you get down to the last 2-3 spots, they are usually all equal. Knowing something beyond the tryout is helpful in making a decision. These are tough choices to make, and occasionally we do miss one. If a kid comes in and performs awesome and it was his greatest day ever and he makes the team based on that, ya konw it can happen both ways. If you went based on scout recommendation, then deserving kids would get left out too...
