    Tyrell Godwin

Remember this guy, from Bladen Co. I think several yr's ago, he was set to go to UNC on combined football/ baseball scholarship. also recall he was a top student.
skipped out of going to UNC, instead decided to go straight to pro baseball. I noticed he has never gotten past the AAA level & that's been maybe about 6-7+ yr's?

wonder if a guy like this made the right decision.

He went to UNC and played both baseball and football while he was there. He played at UNC 98-99 and was re-drafted. He was also called to the show last season for a short period, maybe a couple of games.

If you go to UNC's website you can look under baseball and then Tar Heels in the pros. It tells more info on him there.

    Tyrell Godwin

This just happened to remind me, I was in the weight room under Boshamer recently and on the wall they have listed UNC's "personal best" in several categories...bench press, squat, 60 yd. dash etc.

Tyrell ran the 60 in 6.2! WOW!

As my old ball coach used to say..."that's pickin' up and put'em down."

Talking with some area people I know, there was very little D behind them and not much more O. YOu have to make the plays and either get people on base in front of them or drive them if they get on...

BTW... Tyrell Godwin was a Morehead Scholar if I am not mistaken... He cost Carolina no athletic money whatsoever. A very bright young man, and one heckuva player.

    Some More in the Draft

This list of players in the draft might repeat some of those already posted, but it comes from the Raleigh News and Observer:

    Round/Name/Position/School

    3 Aaron Bates, 1B, NCSU
    4 John Still, C-OF, NCSU
    5 Chris Hatcher, C, UNC-W
    5 Jermaine Mitchell, CF, UNC-G
    9 John Raynor, CF, UNC-W
    10 Sam Walls, P, NCSU
11 Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B, West Carteret
    11 Anthony Martinez, 1B, Louisburg
    11 Gib Hobson, RHP, NCSU
    12 Jonathan Diaz, SS, NCSU
    13 Matt Camp, CF, NCSU
    13 Joe Johnson, RHP, Louisburg
    18 Jeff Stallings, RHP, NCSU

What catches your eye are the number of players from NCSU, which has a number of talented players. Also, the number of players coming out of UNC-W, which played in the Chapel Hill regional and did o.k.

Regarding the Brown kid from Milbrook - I saw him throw a couple of games this year and he is terrific. At both games, there were at least half a dozen scouts with their guns in the stands, and he lost both. Team wasn't that great of a hitting team, but was fairly decent defensive club; teams would string a couple of hits on them, steal a base, then score. Yet, because of their pitching, Milbrook was in each game.

North Carolina continues to be a solid baseball state that will continue to produce excellent players, but a lot of the credit goes to those that take their time to work with and develop these players during the summer and fall leagues. Kudos to all those involved.

Kurt played high school ball at West Stanly.
Benton was the 2006 RRC MVP. He hit .426 with 26 RBIs and was 8-0 with a 1.67 ERA.He punched out 77 in 54 innings of work, tossed a pair of shutouts and a remarkable seven of his eight wins were complete games.

In RRC play, however, Benton rose to the occasion. Against conference opponents, the four-year varsity player hit .456, scored 14 runs and drove in 12. On the mound he was 6-0 in 40 innings and fanned 60 including a high of 15 in the regular season championship clincher at Monroe. Benton threw five complete games, a shutout and had a 1.75 ERA. He also carries a 4.66 GPA with a 1270 SAT.
Kurt Benton is a good young man, just a great leader and one hell of a ballplayer.
