    2006 Pre-Season Scrimmages

    Mooresville @ S. Iredell

This used to be a yearly, back yard brawl in years gone by, but this time the two Iredell Co. neighbors squared off in a season opening scrimmage with the Blue Devils taking the wraps off a brand new offense and showcasing newly inserted QB, Sam Allen and his cast of underclassmen speedsters. Blue Devils head coach Barclay Marsh has torn up his Power I play book and appears to be writing his own chapter in Mooresville football lore. The defensive unit for the Blue Devils seem to be making a turn-around from last year as well. But more work is yet to be done. S. Iredell has talent and speed on both sides of the ball and will take a back seat to only NCHSAA 2A runner-ups Lincolnton in their own conference. The Vikings appeared have the early upper hand against Mooresville but the Blue Devils quickly turned things around once the full-field portion began, marching right down the field and punching in a TD on their first drive. SI showed flashes but never threatened in the final phase. Mooresville got another score from their second unit and the JV squad was very strong in their portion of the practice session. Mooresville will travel to E. Rowan for a 6 pm scrimmage next Thursday and open the regular season at home vs. 4A power Davie Co. on 8/25. Many on this team remember the 60-0 beating they took at War Eagle Stadium last season hope to improve their chances this time around at home.

    LETS GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!

West Caldwell made the trip to Marion this evening to scrimmage McDowell. It's always hard to put a good barometer on a team just by one scrimmage. One thing that I will acknowledge is that McDowell had about 40 dressed out tonight and a couple not dressed. This makes the first time in about 15-20 years that the Titans will start the season with around 40 players. Given the fact that the program has been really down in recent years, the increased numbers could be taken as an encouraging sign.

The key to the season IMO will be both lines. Both the O and D'Lines need to perfect their bocking schemes and allow the athletes behind them a chance to do their thing. Again because it was one scrimmage, I don't think I should get too high or low in what I saw. Next week will tell the story.

The Chargers of Crest have had thus far. The first was vs West Charlotte. Crest outscored WC 3 TD's to 1. Robinson tossed 3 TD passes to Bruce Smith. WC scored off of half-back pass. Crest D looked good vs the run, but some questions in the secondary with them being so young. This WC team is as big as they have been in a while. They ran out of time before they got to pull the chains in this one, so it was all 10 plays each through out.

Crest took on Gaffney in the Border Showcase at GWU and it felt like a dang playoff game in front of a huge crowd. Gaffney got the win 21-20, but the game was back and forth with the teams combining for over 600 yrds of offense in 1 half. Crest took the lead 20-14 with about 5 minutes left. Gaffney then took the lead 21-20 with 1:50 left. Crest had a great kick-off return which set them up for a chance to win. Robinson tossed an INT, but the kid for Gaffney earned it. It was just a great athletic play. Robinson overall looks very good. The offense line for Crest is huge and is keeping guys off of Jordan. It also looks like Crest has another RB to go with Toms. Ryan Black is a Jr from the JV team and has looked good. He stands around 6-1 180 which is a nice change of pace from Tosh since he's 5-4 160. This entire Crest offense could be very special. Still some questions on the D, but it's all things that can be worked on. You don't replace a Spikes, Petterson, Bostic, Thompson, Allen, etc. and expect it too be as good as it was. Guys like Mike Edwards, Duane Maddox(possible next well known Crest LB'er), and Tim Cobb can be players, but they have to learn their role.

The Chargers take on Hickory Friday night at the CC Jambo, before they go for real vs Burns on the 25th.

I was told they had their way with Fred T Foard the other night. I assume that was to be expected.

Don't know about quiet. We've made the headlines in the Record and Landmark for the wrong reasons last week. I think We or at least I am a little guarded. North will be missing a couple of starters on D, (a D that has already been depleted with graduation and a transfer), this coming Friday.

The D will probably be all right by the time conference comes around.

Mooresville is the one that scares me... They looked awfully quick last year and they were young. Plus I really want to see Sweezy in red and white HaHA so I hope he has a big year.

Either way can't wait. Fridays will be fun.

Alexander Central has a new QB up from the JV's last year. Last years QB Dustin Harrington has moved to Tailback. AC's strength is the Offensive Line as they return all starters from last year. Kyle Linney leads the Defensive Line and has been offered a full ride to NC State, UNC, and East Carolina. South Carolina, Clemson, and Georgia have also offered but not sure if they have offered a full ride or not. Should be a successful year for the Cougars.
