Team Cuts?, how do you it?

Do you have separate tryouts for JV & Varsity, or all together?
If separate, what about those few select freshmen / soph's that are skilled enough to play on varsity?

Also, do you ever place jr's / sr's on JV?

AMEN! The only problem is that this is really in the wrong "thread" and should be out there by itself.

I've known for a long time that the HS coaches are too smart to buy this travel nonsense. They couldn't tell you which boys won the AAU National Championship and which one didn't. All they care about is 1.) Do you know the game, and 2.) Can you play! Not did your Dad and 4 or 5 other Dads get together and "recruit" the best talent and leave the other teams in the dust. By 15 or 16 Daddy can't help you. He's relegated to the bleachers wondering who that really good kid is and where he came from? How could we have missed him when he was 11?

 

It all depends on the coaching / philosophy

The kids that get a solid fundemental base at a young age have a tremendous advantage over the ones that do not in the game of baseball. When my son was much younger my focus was on teaching him how to properly throw. A solid sound simple approach at the plate that he could repeat over and over and over. The proper way to catch the baseball. And respect for the game. Take care of this and you have built a solid baseball foundation. What hurts some kids is the "coaches" are so concerned with winnning that they do not teach at a young age. These kids may win alot at a young age but will suffer when it matters most at the older levels of the game. Whats happened with alot of these younger players is they are playing every weekend and and they dont practice. Some parents seem to think that if they win enough tournements it validates what they are doing. My boy must be really good we won last weekend in Concord. I coached AAU for several years in the summer after the HS season ended. We won a state title and finished in the top five in the nation a couple of times. Heck I used to coach HS all week and travel on the week ends with my AAU boys. But we practiced all the time. After HS practice they would take the field and practice behind and sometimes with the HS players. It was about learning the game and understanding that the fundementals of the game were going to be the foundation of your baseball house. I finally got out of AAU because I started to get parents that wanted to play every week end and did not want to practice during the week. Not for me folks.

 

I understand using a list to make cuts if you are at a school thats having 100 kids tryout, but i really like talking to the players cut individually. It might seem like a waste of valuble time, but remember Michael Jordan got cut from his 10th grade basketball team.....what if he'd got mad over some list telling him he's not good enough and did not tryout anymore. I mean thats very unlikely but I would like to be on every players good side, whether they make a team or not. Also off season workouts are extremely important to a player making a team or getting cut, if I've got a kid who comes to every workout vs. a kid with a little bit more talent who sits on his butt all fall, you know who I want in my program!

yes we do have seperate tryouts to start with. first jv then varsity. after 1st cuts we brign them together. by that time we know if we may have that special freshman or sophomore. we have never had a junior on jv. possibly looking at that this year with so many seniors, 13. any ideas on that.

 

13?

13 seniors on a HS baseball team may be a record?? that's a pretty incredible #.

 

scary for next year huh. but we still have several juniors in the program. got to figure out what to do with them
