I think any kid who is unsigned or who has a genuine desire to play college baseball should attend this event. There are gonna be several schools from across NC. If you are not getting the exposure you need this will be one of your last chances.

Believe me, college coaches will get involved with their own teams in January and do not come up for air until about April or May. there will very little scouting at your high school games unless they are there to see an individual player.

Last year I saw several kids who we ended up recruiting from this event. Many I had never heard of before.

Braves my son went. He said the pitchers and catchers were in one dugout, while the infielders and outfielders were in the other. The coaches that were there stayed with the pitchers and catchers. He said they only got a few ground balls, and turned two twice. He said when they hit all the coaches were eating hotdogs or something and didn't watch anyone hit that they could tell. When Coach Smith told them they could leave if they didn't want to stay for the seminar everyone left. Just relaying what I was told.

    Showcase

First of all let me say that there was a great turnout. Roughly 60 kids attended the showcase. Five colleges were represented (Only DII, DIII, and JUCO, because it was a dead period for DI). Roughly 25 kids stayed for the admissions speech afterward. Each infielder got 8 groundballs left and right, 2 turns, and 1 coming in. Each OF got 2 throws to third 2 to second, and 2 to home. Guys remember this was a showcase not an instructional camp. I've been to a lot of showcases and I felt like each player got as many if not more than any other showcase I've been to. The point was to see talent. I know that this is a trivial comment, but I spoke with a lot of the kids there, and they said that really wanted to see the Ohio St. Michigan game as well. There were also a lot of kids from out of state that had long drives ahead of them. Each hitter got two rounds of 8. The other coaches that were there had to eat too. They got a bite and came right back down and sat in the dugout and watched every hitter hit. I felt like things went smoothly and there was some pretty good talent out there this weekend.

I went to the showcase to observe what talent was there. I thought the showcase was ran very smoothly for what I saw especially considering the fact that there were 60 kids there.

I feel that providing the number of ground balls and swings that Andro mentioned above was reasonable considering the number of kids. I too, have been to other showcase's in which the number of rep's were not as high. Don't forget the kid's also ran the sixty in addition to what Andro listed above.

I feel that we have to use some common sense with the number of rep's when there are 60 kids there, no one wanted to be there 8 hrs and like Andro said some kids had a long drive ahead of them. Also, most coaches are able to see if a kid has what they are looking for in a couple rep's anyway.
Overall, I felt this was a good showcase and great way for HS senior's and jr's to get there name out there.

As for kids leaving early, I don't like it. I constantly hear from parents and kids that they don't get a chance to be "seen" by college coaches or learn about the college experience and when they do get a chance, they leave early. I feel that they could have recieved some benefit from listening to a college coach and administrator speak if they are truly interested in playing college baseball. Now, I understand that some of the kids may have had to go b/c of a long drive or prior engagements, etc... but for those who left b/c of a game or for no reason at all it bugs me. I played baseball in college and if you can't give up a few hours in the afternoon for a seminar then you probably won't be able to handle the rigor's of playing in college baseball anyway.

Anyway, I just feel that the coaches and administrator's did a great job in giving kids an opportunity to have their talent's seen. Overall,
I applaude coach Anderson and Smith for having his showcase and feel it was a solid event for the kids.

I'm glad to read that they had such a great turnout. I hope we were of some help in getting the word out.

I hope all had a great thanksgiving!

This is the first time I have checked out the board since last week. When I read blademan's report I was slackjawed because I was one of the coaches there and I thought it went exceptionally well and I saw several players for the first time that I like very much.

Guess what.... there weren't any hotdogs there I would have ate several. But I did eat about five pieces of pizza while I watched some guys take BP.

this is another example of a kid not realizing what amazing oppritunities are out there for them these days. College coaches sitting on the field while you work out for them only a few feet away.

I guess it has becomes the norm now, but only a few years ago the abbey's showcase would have been a major chance to show off your skills, not worry about how many hot dogs we ate....

I am really joking. My real point is belmont abbey did everything that a coach needed to evaluate a plyer outside of a game.

My son has attended several showcases this fall and this was one of the most organized ones we have been to..

By the way- What teenage boy wouldn't rather go to the mall (or something similar) than listen to the college admissions counselor? Generally they want to play ball and have fun.

I know its important and necessary, but a lot of them won't realize the importance until a few years down the road. Maybe when they have a son getting ready to go to college.

If the admissions and informational session was held first before the workout, then everyone would have seen it.

One other thing--- You can't beat the price of this showcase. I don't think you would get that many more ground balls or hits at an event you pay $100 or more for.

Thanks to Coach Anderson and Coach Smith for the opportunity.
