"WHO's WHO" of NC HS Baseball Coaches

If we began to compile a list of the ALL TIME GREATEST coaches in NC High School Baseball History, who would belong on this list? Things to consider may include wins-losses, state championships, longevity, contruibutions to the game that cannot be measured in wins-losses, etc...?

I am not looking for a popularity contest of your favorite current coach here, let's do this some legitimate justice with alot of thought. The thread on Coach Smith made me think of this idea.

Some men that come to mind to me based on my experiences in baseball, in no particular order, other than Coach Smith, of whom I hold a deep admiration and a lot of respect for:

Linwood Hedgepeth (Whiteville HS)
George Whitfield (Richmond Co and Goldsboro HS)
James "Rabbit" Fulghum (Greene Central)
Buck Hardee (New Hanover)
Ronald Vincent (JH Rose)


Who are some you know of? What are their qualities?

 

Bob Rhodes (Olympic HS-Charlotte)

The most underrated, underpublicized HS coach in the state. As the dean of Charlotte HS baseball, Coach Rhodes is entering his 80th year (although I believe he is only 60 something). And all of those years have been spent with one school.

He is not a yeller or a screamer, but he is old school. He is not into all of the travel ball, showcasing stuff; he just believes in the fundamentals and for the kids to have fun. He's had some championship teams and some poor ones, but he coaches the same with either one. I asked a local respected HS coach if he thought Rhodes should retire. He looked at me quizzically and said, "Are you kidding? That man has forgotten more than I'll ever know. He needs to stay as long as he wants."

So, I nominate Coach Bob Rhodes to the TBR HS Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame

WOW, Braves!!! I totally agree with ya'. Bob is THE most underrated coach in the area. Lots of baseball knowledge and God love him, he rarely gets the talent pool to make any runs for anything lately. But, he has a knack for getting the most success out of the available talent at hand.
I know that Greg really enjoyed playing for Bob. As parents, we could not have asked for a better role model. Sooooooo.......kudos to Bob!!!

i agree with the oriole great high school coach one state title 16 conference titles in 17 years 4 state finals appearences made the playoffs every year and made glenn baseball into what it is today and turned alot of young boys into men

 

Dale Ijames will take his and beat yours, or take yours and beat his.And in the process he will teach his players not only the proper way to play the game(only one way to play per Ijames) he will make better men out of them.

 

Henry Jones

I vote for Henry Jones. 6 state championships and over 500 wins

 

Charley Spivey from Lee County and Milton Sentor from Fuquay.

Look at how far Fuquay made it last year with some key players not allowed to play for discipline reasons. That was some top notch coaching and it showed those young men that charactor means something. Those boys learned a life lesson more important than any baseball skill.

Both these men have won State Championships, produced quality college/pro players and they have two of the nicest fields in the state.

 

Kenny Meekins Manteo HS

This guy just wins and wins and wins. It doesnt matter how many guys he looses to new schools being built in the area he continues to put a quality team on the field. He has won at every level he has coached 3-A 2-A 1-A. And if you have ever been to their field well it speaks for itself. He is a class act and one of the best coaches in NC year in and year out.
