Several years ago a friend asked Paul Faulk, who at that time was a scout with the Devilrays and is now a crosschecker with the Braves, what it was that seperated the boys that make it from the ones that don't. Paul said "well, when you boil it right down, it comes to two things, p%##y and the curveball. If a boy can avoid the first 'un, and hit the second 'un, he can go far in this game."
Seriously, it depends on the young lady. If she understands that the boy has a dream that can take him to places that he has worked so hard for, then she can help him by being unconditionally supportive. If she is demanding of his attention when he is trying to focus on his game then it may be time for an "intervention". My son waivered a bit over a girl this past summer. We had a little talk and it just so happened that one of my wife's Victoria Secret catalogs was laying on the living room table. I opened it up and said to him "these young ladies date major leaguers." He got the point real quick. Keep working towards your goals and in the end, the rewards can be better than you can imagine!

Hey Gman...you still got the catalogs?

I agree with Gman...most of it depends on the "young lady" as well as the player. My son is dating a very supportive young lady that I feel has helped keep him stay grounded. She knows baseball has been and is his life long dream and she supports that 100%. She does not put any pressure on their relationship....with that said the player himself must be mature enough to keep his priorities in order and stay focused on what is there in front of him and maintain the same committment and work ethic that helped get him there to begin with.

    This brings up two memories:

First, my HS football coach on trying to get the players to put more time into the game and less on the girls: ""P%%%Y is undefeated and untied".

Second, another Linwood Hedgpeth moment. The first tournament of the summer several years ago the Pelicans all brough their girlfriends for all day Saturday ball. We didn't play well that day and Coach was having a hard time getting finding players between games for BP etc. After the third and last game, Coach told each player that they were welcome back on Sunday but the girlfriends were not. I don't think the girls ever came to another tournament.
