    FLORENCE, SC- Belmont Abbey stunned sixth-ranked Francis Marion 2-1 in the opener, and fell 7-5 in the second game of a college baseball doubleheader on the campus of Francis Marion this afternoon. The split gives the Crusaders a 2-1 record, while the Swamp Foxes are now 1-1.

    In the opener, Belmont Abbey scored unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Seth Waller struck out to lead off the fifth frame, but reached when the third strike was a wild pitch. He went to second on a single, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a third baseman Nick Popp sacrifice fly to left center. In the sixth, Waller drove home the second Crusader run with an infield groundout. The inning was prolonged by two FMU errors and a hit batter.

    Francis Marion scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Pinch hitter Eric Armstrong plated Ryan Hewitt with a run-scoring single to left.

    FMU junior Dylan Owen was tagged with the loss despite fanning seven in six innings and allowing only six singles. He fell to 0-1. Belmont Abbey starter Andy Helms earned the win after he tossed five shutout innings, and Evan Jonas recorded the final three outs to earn a save.

    Belmont Abbey center fielder Patrick Atwell (2-for-4) was the lone player on either side with more than one hit in game one. It was the first time since 1994 that the Patriots lost their season opener.

    In the second game, the Swamp Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Abbey would tie it at two in its half of the second, getting a run on a wild pitch and a bases loaded walk. Francis Marion scored two more in its half of the second to regain the two-run advantage, but the Abbey trimmed the lead to one in the fourth on an RBI single by Derek Swilley. The Abbey plated two more in the fifth to regain the lead at 5-4, but the Swamp Foxes scored three in the fifth, two coming on a single by Jared Barkdoll, as Francis Marion held on to win.

    Francis Marion senior right-hander Brooks Sinquefield (1-0) allowed only one hit over three innings in relief to earn the win. Crusader starter Andrew Morton (0-1) allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings and was charged with the loss.

    The Abbey is back in action Saturday when it hosts Concord College in a noon doubleheader at Abbey Yard.

    Baseball Senators Receive Pre-Season Accolades
    Several Walters State Senator Baseball Players have received pre-season accolades in recent weeks. In the College Baseball Preview Issue of Baseball America, both Stephen Shults and Jack Tilghman were chosen as pre-season 1st Team All-American's, with Tilghman being chosen as the number 8 prospect in the country for the 2007 MLB Draft.

    The Perfect Game Website, known as the World's Largest Baseball Scouting Report Service, several Senators were selected in the Top 200 Prospects in Junior College Baseball. 3B Stephen Shults, RHP Jack Tilghman, RHP Ryan Kelly, OF Adam Milligan, OF Michael Wheeler, and LHP Bobby Thompson, were all chosen in the Top 200 players in the nation, with Shults (3) and Tilghman (7) being selected in the Top 10. The Perfect Game also selected a pre-season All-American Team. Stephen Shults, Jack Tilghman, and Michael Wheeler were all selected as 1st-Team All-Americans, while Bobby Thompson received 4th Team Honors.

    As a team, the Senators have been selected as the Pre-Season Number One Team in the Nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Baseball America Magazine, and The Perfect Game Recruiting Service. The Senators open their season this upcoming Saturday against Florence Darlington Tech in Florence, SC.

    BELMONT, NC- Belmont Abbey junior first baseman Seth Waller led a 20-hit attack with four hits, including two doubles, and freshman second baseman Alex Castellanos finished 3-3 with two doubles and a triple as the Crusaders defeated North Carolina Central 22-7 this afternoon in a college baseball game. The Abbey improves to 3-1, while the Eagles fall to 0-2.

    Abbey reliever Michael Rue picked up his first win of the year, holding the Eagles to one run on four hits in three and two-thirds innings. He struck out three and walked none. Eagles starter Michael Cornwell fell to 0-1 in the loss after surrendering eight runs on five hits in three innings of work. He walked four and struck out none.

    The Crusaders, which scored in every inning but the fifth, wasted no time in taking a lead it would never lose, as they scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Two of the runs in the second came via a triple by leftfielder Derek Swilley.

    NCCU would close the gap to 6-4 after it plated four runs in the third, but the Crusaders responded with two in its half of the frame, as Jordan Pegram doubled to left center that scored Castellanos, who led off with a walk and stole second. Pegram moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Daniel Cayton to push the lead to 8-4.

    The lead increased to 11-4 after the Crusaders pushed three more across in the fourth, with two of those runs coming on rightfielder Alex Udwari’s second homer of the year, a blast to right center.

    The Eagles scored two more in the fifth, but the Crusaders exploded for five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to open up an 18-6 lead. North Carolina Central pushed one across in the eighth, but the Abbey scored five more in its half, with designated hitter Danny O’Brien scoring two with a lacing double inside the leftfield line scoring Waller and leftfielder Tyler McKenzie. Joey Will worked a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit, as the Crusaders earned the win.

    BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team banged out 35 hits in two games as it swept Concord College 21-4 and 16-8 in a college baseball doubleheader at the Abbey Yard this afternoon. The two victories improve the Crusaders record to 5-1, while the Mountain Lions fall to 0-2.

    In the first game, freshman second baseman Alex Castellanos led the 19 hit attack, going 3-4 with seven runs batted in and three runs scored. He clubbed a three-run homer in the first and followed that with a grand slam and a single in the second inning, part of a 12 run Abbey frame.

    Concord jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, but the Crusaders exploded for six runs in their half of the inning, and after the Mountain Lions pushed one more across in the second, the Abbey broke the contest wide open with the 12-run second inning. The Abbey added one more in the fourth on a solo homer by junior first baseman Will Breslin, and two more in the sixth on a two-run shot by senior rightfielder Alex Udwari.

    Andy Helms improved to 2-0 in the win, as he allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in six innings of work. He fanned six and walked one. Drew McClanahan was charged with the loss. He yielded 11 runs, all earned, on 12 hits in one and a thirds innings.

    The second game was much like the first, with the Mountain Lions bolting out to a 3-0 lead after the first, but the Abbey matched it in its half of the second, using a two-run homer by Seth Waller and an RBI single by catcher Kyle Smith that plated Castellanos. The Crusaders extended its lead to 6-3 after scoring three more in the third, getting a two-run homer from Udwari and a solo shot from Breslin in back-to-back at bats.

    Concord regained the lead in the fourth when it scored five times, but Belmont Abbey exploded for nine runs in its half of the inning as it sent 13 men to the plate. The Crusaders banged out eight hits in the frame and scored all nine of its runs with two outs as six players drove in at least one run. Waller closed the scoring in the sixth with his second homer of the day, a shot off the scoreboard in left center to provide the winning margin.

    Brett DiPisquale earned his first win of the year in a relief effort. The third of four Crusaders hurlers, DiPisquale did not allow a hit or a run while striking out two in an inning and a third. He is now 1-0. Thomas Ayscue fell to 0-1 after allowing five runs on three hits in an inning and a third.

    The final game of the series gets underway tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

    BELMONT, NC- Belmont Abbey designated hitter Seth Waller doubled home Will Breslin with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, and freshman pitcher Evan Jonas did not allow a hit or a run in the final inning and two-thirds as the Crusaders completed a sweep of Concord University with a 4-3 win this afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders increase its winning streak to four as it improves to 6-1 on the year, while the Mountain Lions fall to 0-3.

    Jonas entered the game in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and coaxed a ground ball by Brooks Cullen that was bobbled, allowing Concord to tie the game at three. Two pitches later, Jonas got out of the jam with an inning-ending double play to end the threat. He worked a perfect ninth to up his record to 1-0. Concord starter Allen Schrudell was charged with the loss. He allowed four runs, all earned, on nine hits while striking out six and walking two in seven and one-thirds innings. He threw 126 pitches.

    The contest was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Mountain Lions scored two unearned runs on a throwing error by Abbey starting pitcher David Rue, but the Crusaders cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth on freshman second baseman Alex Castellano’s fourth homer of the year. That was the tally until the bottom of the seventh when the Crusaders took the lead for the first time after they scored twice.

    Catcher Kyle Smith ripped a two-out single to right, scoring shortstop Josh Haire, who had earlier walked. That was followed by an infield single by centerfielder Patrick Atwell, who beat out the throw after he hit a slow dribbler to second base that scored Castellanos, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

    Concord tied the game in the eighth as it loaded the bases with one out, and scored on an Abbey fielding error, but Jonas ended the threat with the double play on the next at bat. The game did not stay tied for long, as the Crusaders pushed one run across in the eighth.

    After a leadoff out, Breslin hit a routine fly ball to left, but leftfielder Tyler Webb lost the ball in the sun, allowing the ball to drop safely. Waller followed with a double off the top of the wall, scoring Breslin easily from first for the winning run. Jonas worked a perfect ninth to preserve the win.

    The Crusaders recorded ten hits as Waller went 3-3 with two doubles. Breslin finished 2-4 with a pair of doubles, and Haire also finished with a double.

    The Abbey is back in action Wednesday when it travels to Durham to face North Carolina Central. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

    Jordan Cudney (2006 Myers Park High School graduate) picked up his first collegiate victory coming in as a relief pitcher to pitch 2 scoreless innings (gave up 0 hits) as St. Andrews Presbyterian College (Laurinburg, NC) defeated Chowan by a 5 - 4 score in a 13 inning game on 2/15/2007.

    CLINTON, SC- After matching Belmont Abbey run for run through nine innings, Presbyterian used a double to to push two across in the bottom of the 10th to claim a 10-9 win over the Crusaders.

    In the top of the 10th inning, Belmont-Abbey's Alex Udwari brought in pinch runner Spencer Sobol from third base with a sacrifice fly to right field.

    Russell Robinson led off the Blue Hose half of the 10th inning with a walk. Casey Carlson then followed with an infield single to shortstop to put runners at first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Craven, the Crusaders decided to intentionally walk Bobby Holmes and load the bases for pinch hitter Kemper Booth.

    With two strikes, Booth ripped an Evan Jonas pitch down the right field line to score Casey Carlson and Russell Robinson, giving the Blue Hose their third consecutive victory and a 5-5 record on the season. The loss is only the second of the season for Belmont-Abbey who fall to 6-2.

    Jesse Harmon won his second decision of the year after entering the game in the ninth inning for PC. The Blue Hose used five different arms out of the bullpen in relief of starter Andrew Cockerham who lasted just over an inning.

    Belmont-Abbey's Evan Jonas was handed the loss after facing four batters in the 10th and surrendering the game-winning run.

    After falling behind 4-0 early on, Presbyterian fought back to put three on the board in the second. PC would later tie the ballgame at six with another three-run inning in the fourth. The two teams would trade runs over the remaining five innings of play before going to extra-innings to decide the game.

    PC had a balanced offensive attack with 10 hits coming from eight different players. The Crusaders were paced by Udwari finishing with three RBI, two hits, and a run scored
