HS vs. JuCo Catchers to Div. 1

Heard a HS coach say that the major Div. 1 colleges put primary focus on getting their catchers with Juco experience.

It depends

There are major D-1 programs that do not take JUCO players at all. There are major D-1 programs that take some JUCO players. And then there are major D-1 programs that take alot of JUCO players. It would depend on the teams needs at the particular time if in fact they did take JUCO players.

 

Coaches are looking to get the best players period. If there is a catcher they want and fill could help improve their program its not going to matter if they come from a 1A high school or a national JUCO powerhouse. There are pros and cons to both. The good thing about a JUCO player is you will have a better idea of what you are getting. Sometimes high school players don't pan out for one reason or another. JUCO guys have been through the fire already and aren't near as likely to falter. But as far as schools only recruiting JUCO guys, I would think that is a stretch. Coaches want the best players that are going to help them compete.

this seemed to be what was being expressed, that the major D1's, in an ideal situation (you know if they had their "druthers"), preferred to seek a catcher from the juco ranks with a more proven track record & experience in the trenches. the conversation was specifically about the catcher position only.
