South Caldwell beats St. Stephens 2 - 1 in 12 innings. Madison Bumgarner started the game for South but Jimmy Messer gets the win. All kinds of pro scouts at the game.

Great game. SC got a homerun from Bradley Craig in the second inning then left the bases loaded with no outs in the 3rd. I think Bumgarner had a no hitter going into the 7th inning but gave up a one out homer to St. Stephens starting pitcher Patrick Johnson. Messer came on to pitch in the 8th and did a great job SC scored the winning run on a passed ball in the 12th inning. SC had a couple chances to score but couldn't get the hit when they needed it.
It is early so as expected the bats were a little rusty for both teams plus two of the best starting pitchers in the state had a little to do with the lack of hitting. 20 or more scouts at the game probablly had some trying a little to hard also

I think that going against two of the state's best pitcher was the key to the low run productionn...........

I heard PJ only threw 5 innings for St.Stephens? If that's right, who else threw for them? They must have done well to hold down that lineup.

    What have we learned?

Four rounds of one and done. How close was SC from getting beat in this game? One play , one pitch ? They have to be the favorites there is no doubt about it. But this game has to show those that want to anoit anyone with a state title before the games are played that anything can happen in a one game situation. You put a stud on the hill like PJ or Runion and there are others in a one game situation and it can get pretty interesting. Sounds like a great game between two really good teams.
