While attending one of the games at the UNC/Seton Hall series, the dad of one of the SH players remarked at all the homegrown talent on UNC's squad. He said something along the lines of, "you guys down here seem to have some sort of baseball player dispensing machine, coaches put in their requests, and out pops the player".

One of the problems with the west is small school sizes. Here in Henderson County we play some pretty darn good baseball, but the kids are split between 3 2A and 1 1A school, approx 3,000 students. You could put 9 kids capable of playing D-1 on the field every year. Combine those schools and we could compete with anyone in the state on the baseball diamond. Transylvania County has Brevard and Rosman setting 10 miles apart. Combined would be a very competitive 3A school in all sports. Some of the mountain school situations have to do with geography, but most of the time what holds consolidation back is nothing but good ole local politics.

The current group of NC players in the national spotlight certainly deserve the recognition that they are getting. For many years NC players just didn't seem to get the recognition that many "believed" they should be getting. In fact, it wasn't long ago that one local school made no bones about the fact that they didn't recruit locally. They just didn't.

Nonetheless, I believe NC has always had great baseball players,,,, and I believe with some of the terrific year-round programs that we now have in NC,,,,,,,, the caliber of players will only get better. I disagree we won't have 2 of the top 8 players again,,,,,,, its very possible we will.

Lastly, the age of the internet and message boards who try to be as GREAT as TBR  also have helped get information out about NC players as well. Being from an area where we usually only hear about Piedmont & Western players, I have always enjoyed hearing about the great players and teams we have in the east.

I agree the year round programs is what has made a huge difference. Even here in the mountains the summer/fall programs have improved every year. Also the opening of Darren Holmes facility, Accelerated Sports has been a tremendous asset to the area, in giving the kids a place to work out during the winter. It's impressive and the local HS players seem to be taking advantage of it. It only gets better.

    football & other sports

how do you think that year-round baseball affects other HS sports? are there a lower % of student-athletes playing multiple sports now?

    Not Just Baseball

Not many multiple sport athletes at all anymore...it's not just baseball, but basketball, football, and tennis are year round. You all most have to specialize if you are going to keep up with the competition. :badass:

South Caldwell moved up to #5 in Baseball America's top 25 national high school ranking today. Hmm. There might be even more at stake than a state title for the Spartans this year. The thing that I really like is that Coach Parham has a big roster, but is keeping everyone involved. 19 out of 20 SC players saw action in the first two games.
