We have had three players, two starters, miss significant time due to injuries sustained in PE CLASSES!!! My son missed three weeks of showcase ball, last fall, due to an injury he got in a PE CLASS! The Friday before the Impact Pitcher/Catcher Showcase he was required to "max out" in an advanced conditioning class. He told the instructor (football coach) about the showcase and was told "lift or get an F". I know it cost him at the showcase.
Does anyone else deal with this kind of idiocy at their son's school?

Yes I have also seen these same things. This is my youngest sons senior year and luckily, for the first time, the baseball coach got the weightlifting class. He said he was so glad because now the football guys can lift their way and tha baseball guys can do it his way. Too many years the football coaches monopolized the weight training classes and have no clue as to the difference. Of course now that my son is a senior and has lifted heavy all the past years he now is a 170 lb. MI that benches 300.

We are very fortunate here to have a certified strength and conditioning coach that has also been our defensive coordinator. All he asks is that the kids communicate with him, and he will work with them. He has always worked with me and my players. All I have to do is talk to him, and our football caoch also who teaches weight training. I can say this, that if your son is lifting, the preferred tinme is the fall, out of season. If he is playing showcase ball, then you need to be careful of the lifting, etc..., unless he is stretching properly afterward and continuing during the day. It's not bad to lift during the season if there is proper attention being put on flexibility and he doesn't lift heavy on game day. Let's be real here, athletes at higher levels lift when they play to maintain, but even they dont play year-round. I would think that most reasonable coaches would work with kids in other sports. How did your son approach the weight training coach? Is there a plan for flexibility as well as strength, what about quickness and plyometrics?
There needs to be some communication somewhere and it should be done in the right way.

    other classes

What would happen if you said "If you get an F in Math, you can't play in the showcase".....why are we picking on PE? You wanted an A so you have to earn it. The player at hand could have taken AP Biology!!

I know people get hurt in Weight Training, but didn't he know they would have to lift (max) BEFORE signing up for this class. Also, an F in 1 MAX OUT and A's on everything else should give you an A overall!
1 showcase does not hurt you either. I am sorry for the injuries but a class is class.....

Your exactly right. A kid knows what is expected and if you sign up for the class (PE or AP Chemistry) you should be held to the same standards as everyone else. If you don't want to lift during baseball season then there is a simple solution to your problem. DONT SIGN UP FOR WEIGHT TRAINING.

PE is a required class by the way. And the player should be able to talk to the teacher and make a plan for how they will lift if they have the class in season.

Health and PE is a graduation requirement. There is a set curriculum by NCDPI for Health and PE. Weightlifting in the form of a weightlifting class is not a part of the regular PE program, it is an elective in the form of Advanced PE or Weight Training class. Electives are not required classes...

However, whether or not it is a required class, if the teacher/coach really cares about the well-being of the student-athlete, then effective communication will take place and a plan implemented to meet both the needs of the individual athlete, regardless of sport and the requirements of the class.

I mean to say before the second sentence "If you do sign up for weight training" then you should be able to talk with the teacher. My mistake.

    Football Guy

Thanks for reminding us why we like Baseball so much better than Football.

Maxing out is not a requirement of weight training. It clearly depends on the goals of the weight training regimen.................or whether or not a Football Guy is teaching the class!

Its not a requirement, but it is a measurement of growth and improvement.
