There is only one word in the above poll that does NOT appear in the OBR (to my knowledge... I guess I could be wrong - but I don't think so). I'll give everyone a couple of days... then my answer.

Hey BigDipper- I don't really know, so this is a guess at best. I'm going to pick "June".

and when you do post the correct word, will you please tell me what that word "anteatervoyeur" is: I've always wondered what the umpires carried in their back pocket, is that what it is? Is it an instrument that discourages parent (vocal) interference?

Crew does not appear anywhere in the OBR. The rest do:

Grass appears first on page 6 - a diagram of the field. In the legend it has a symbol for grass lines.

Horsehide is in there with what the ball can be made out of... white horsehide or leather. The problem with horsehide was that it came apart too easily because of the tanning process and rules were having to be made up about when balls come apart.

Ropes is in the book when talking about out of play areas (5.10). Before modern stadiums were built, the home management would rope off areas on the field (sometimes in fair territory) to accomodate overflow crowds.

Avoirdupois is my favorite word in the rule book because nobody has a clue its in there and nobody has a clue what it means. In the book it says a ball shall weigh between 5 and 5 1/4 oz. Avoirdupois. Basically it is a way to measure moisture in yarn.

Hooker appears in an example when talking about batting out of order. In the book its says assume the following batting order:
    Abel-Baker-Charles-Daniel-Edward-Frank-George-Hooker-Irwin

June is in the book when describing the contruction of a playing field after June 1, 1958 minimum distance of 325 from home base to the nearest fence, minimum 400 feet to center field.

Professional appears in Rule 1 when talking about bats. "No laminated or experiemental bats shall be used in a professional game."

Peril is mentioned when stepping into a dugout to make a catch.

Vines is in rule 6.8 talking about ground rule doubles "a fair ball after touching the ground, bounds into the stands, or passes through, over or under a fence, or through or under a scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery, or vines on the fence....."

But I forgot some other of my favorites... Golf, Licorice, Paraffin and Crotch are all in the OBR.

It just doesn't seem right to have a foreign word in an American game....especially one that appears to be French. :stunned: :laugh4:
