You are right Guru!!!!! I have been coaching Football, Wrestling, and Softball for a number of years and kids now days are not leaders. So they need to find that leadership from some where and that is what we try to show every athlete we work with

I understand kids not playing because of missed practices. But tell me how fair it is when you have girls at practice, on time, ready to go, practicing hard, leaving the field bloody and tired and then they sit the bench the next day? I see this all the time and it irritates me to no end. So exactly what is dedication? Missing practice or showing up for practice, half piddled work out and still start the game or come to practice, bust your butt and sit the bench only to come back for more? I'm sorry but IMO, you gotta leave some sweat on the field in practice before you can gain any glory in a game.

    Peace.

SO what happens when so many players miss a practice that if you discipline by holding them out of starting or playing in the next game, you would have to forfeit the game because you can't put 9 on the field??

If you have a program with that happening (except maybe prom) Missed practices are the LEAST of your problems.

Sickness (legit sickness) death, those are acceptable. Flat out not showing up, well that's unexcusable. And honestly, I have seen few if any HS teams that only have 10-12 players. Put the ones sitting the bench because they aren't considered "STUDS", in the game. Oh and before I get attacked about this, I got a kid on the team that plays and is considered to be a great player. Let her lay out of practice and I'll be the first on the band wagon to bench her. Put a girl in a position where she is letting her team down and causes them a loss and I guarantee she won't miss practice if it hairlips hell.

    The Only Reason

The only reason I keep using the word "STUDS" so that I'll get a clear thought on the question and get an honest answer from the thread posters...it really doesn't matter if they are "STUDS" or not.....:sultan:

Many coaches will not make many rules as all players will have to follow same. If U are a win at all cost type of guy, U don't want any rules that could come back to bite U. If U are someone who is trying to teach more than just softball, U may have some rules and stick by them, knowing their can be specific reasons for waiving or adjusting a rule. It happens in the workplace as well.
Just one comment, I think a great deal of problems in sports, the home, and workplace, would not occur if all of us took responsibility for our actions and lived by the golden rule. Not saying I am perfect by any means and am quilty my self, just think it might be worth a try from all of us to live up to our own expectations and maybe all would follow!
Have a wonderful and blessed Easter and remember our troops, our sick friends, our fellow softball fans and players, as well as our families! LOL to all on the board! Oh Ray, thank U for the wonderful comment!
