Amazing First (and Last) Homer Story

My son went all the way through DYB ball without a homer. After allstars and just before moving up to the high school field, I took a team to a neighboring town to play in a late summer tourney. In the championship game which would be his last on a little league field, my son belted not one but two homers. He went all the way through HS and now pitches in college and never hit another one. I still have both balls.

My middle son is now 26, we moved last spring and while packing we found a baseball tucked away in drawer marked and dated as his 1st one over the fence when he was 11 years old. He went on to hit many HR during his little league, HS & Legion years. But that one ball is still very special.

I was fortunate to have 3 boys and follow them through their days of playing baseball. Wossa, you are right it they grow up way too fast. My mother used to ask me, why are we always at the baseball field. My goal at the younger age was hopefully have them love this game, so when they got to high school age they would be at the baseball field, not running the streets. We did accomplish this.

I know this board talks alot about their boys of summer playing beyond the high school level. Well none of my 3 did, but the oldest is teaching and is an asst. high school baseball coach now & head Legion Coach , my middle son is in the business world and my youngest is in college and going to teach also and made his coaching debut this year at Cullowhee Middle School.

Cherish the moments, they will be adults way too soon.

As I read your post I thought of my own son's first official home run. He was ten and playing 3A. He cleared the center field fence by twenty feet. We lost the game by one but that didn't stop the thrill of that night. Last night I again watched my now 6'5" 250lb (senior ) hit a two run homer. The thrill is still the same. In my eyes he could have still been ten years old. His grin hasn't changed at all and as he passed by I yelled touch 'em all! knowing he couldn't hear me but it didn't matter, he knows I'm there and always will be. This is the last season for my son, no new glove, no need for a bat only the rest of his senior season to finish out playing a sport he's been playing since he was four years old. He will continue on as a football player next year in college and while I know that was his dream I also know theres nothing like the thrill of a home run. Enjoy every second, I'm sitting here wondering how it passed us so fast.

Congrats....you never forget these moments. I went down to Winter Haven, Fla last week to watch my son pitch in a minor league spring training game...as I walked down to the field with him I caught myself thinking back to watching him the first time standing on a T-Ball field trying to decide which hand to put his glove on.

Enjoy it Larry....the memories last forever!!!!!

Larry- I hope you kept the ball...and make sure you put all the necessary information on it, then put it in a ball case
