Just wondered if anyone has an opinion about coaches that drop the "f" bomb and GD phrase on a regular basis to the college level baseball players. Should that kind of language be acceptable from a person who is supposed to be setting an example for our young adults. I am not naive enough to think that the boys don't use bad language themselves, however when coaches uses those words to condemn and show contempt for a player that makes a mistake or to cover his own mistakes, should this be allowed?

My daughter just finished her 2nd (and final year) of college basketball (transferring to another school because of her major) and in their last game her coach dropped the f bomb during a time out and everyone in the building her him.....he is a class act.....anyway, as the time out ended and before play resumed, I yelled out 'that was not necessary' several times and he heard me as well as some of the girls on the team...they told me after the game they heard me and appreciated the comment.......I don't care if they are boys/young men or girls/young women, no coach should be using language like that....especially if it is a school team at any level....they are suppose to be teachers and models......so many are pathetic.....

    & w/ the officials

and when coaches argue with the ref's, umpires..............most of the time I just feel the coaches are wanting to show off and get in the spotlight. most of the time it accomplishes nothing.

Sometimes a lot gets accomplished....especially during a bang-bang play later in the game...or a borderline pitch at a crucual time.

and basketball?......those coaches crossed the ethics line a long time ago. They are almost cartoonish in their gameday behavior

How does one go about getting this kind of behavior to cease without endangering the position of one's child that has been the subject of such behavior? (Not the only one by any means) This has gone way too far in some instances.

Saw a special on the women's basketball at UCONN a couple of years ago on ESPN and F and GD were regular words during his practice. Heard him tell his a sentence about their playing and f or gd was used 3 or 4 times in that one sentence alone. He's considered one of the best women's basketball coaches ever and he did this while wearing a mic for espn.

Amen......I have played with all types of coaches. All I cared about is if they cared about me. I have had coaches that never cussed and I couldn't stand them. I've had coaches use curse words as nouns, verbs and adjectives (sometimes all in one sentence) and spit on me with a wad of tobacco while yelling...and loved them.

    - I didn't need the coach to be my father; I had one
    - I didn't need the coach to be my friend; I had some
    - I just needed the coach to believe in me; I would "run through a wall"

I think there are many strategies and ways a coach can motivate and express to his/her players certain points. One way is a hug and pat on the back for a job well done. Another is to get in their face and question their manhood while using loose language.

Both are proven to get results. unfortunately most players today are getting quite a few pats on the back in everyday life which has caused this form of motivation for the most part to become useless and taken for granted.

Coaches using positive and negative motivation tools find quickly the "tough love" approach is quicker, more effective, and effecient. Unfortunately bad language and "appearing mean" go hand in hand. It somehow psychologically demands their attention on another level. Like the drill sergeant from Full metal jacket. How effective would his monologue been w/o the foul language?

    two other points....

1- This is the coaches job. His living, his salary, his passion, and dream. He is not in the business of making friends with his players or pleasing their parents on a feel good level. His job is to win games and prepare young men/women for their futures. Coaches develop their styles. Don't forget Coach K, Gary Williams, and Dean Smith are three of the foulest mouth and successful coaches in the history of college sports.

2- Let's be honest if your son listens to hip hop or rap at all he is hearing worse than that in every line of every song out today. If he doesn't listen to hip hop, he probably watches movies and their just as bad.

Beamer, honestly from an outside perspective you are probably upset with your sons coach for other things and this is just a release for you. There is only one John Wooden and he ain't coaching today's kid. Lucky Wooden.
