Hugh has spoken to me about this in the past. The Dirtbags were definitely good for his oldest son. May also work out for his youngest. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Redsoxfan,,,,,,,, I'm happy for your son that things have worked out well for him, but I've got to comment since you emphasized the term "facts". Because to be honest, while you feel that its a "fact" that showcase did this and that for your son,,, I could also mention names of people in my area from 3 different legion programs who have done showcase and they have all personally told me that they felt like it was not helpful. Limited innings, playing only on weekends, all the travel, the money, the fact that their sons were going to play college ball regardless,,,, made all these people really miss the year they took away from legion ball. Just being honest.

I think the one fact that we can all agree on, is whether to do legion vs. showcase must be an individual's decision based on each person's specific situation. In your case, it sounds like it worked.

    Agree Totally

I agree with you totally! I feel it is "facts" only for my son and my situation. Others reach the same destination by different routes. The main thing is, even if you are a marginal ball player, with determination, you can find a way to go beyond being marginal and make it to the next level..

My opinion is, everyone that wants to make it to the next level should at least try, and they can try whatever method (legion, showcase, high school only, etc...) they choose to!

Hear, Hear!! We did all of the above (in some form or fashion) and dont know which one was the most effective, but between all of them, it worked out and ours will be going onto the next level!!

The sad thing about it is all every parent is concerned about is getting his or her son to play at the "Next Level". What ever happened to playing ball to have fun. What is even worse is that most of the kidds parents take a lot of the fun out of playing as teenagers by trying to get their child where they will be SEEN then when they make it to the next level they find it is not for them and only last a year or 2 at the most. There are very few who go through 4 years of college playing ball. I see this more on baseball and softball than anywhere else and most of it if the kid was left alone to just play
like we used to they would have much much more fun and when they get to college and find that it is not for them they will have at least had fun in school and the summer ball they played. And don't come back with that them having fun is what is most important to you because if it was that is what would be posted on here all the time instead of where can my kid be "seen".

    It is very weird

that baseball folks believe that you have to play in special leagues to make it to a college team. What about the football players who only have there football seasons up until they are seniors and then there is a few special events they can attend. Explain how they get seen by recruiters for college. Does this mean that baseball recruiters are not as good as the football boys. I dont think so. I believe it is driven by the win at all cost, and I mean cost if you play travel ball, maybe not for the kids but if you would like to see your child play it is pretty expensive.

Valid point!! - Question tho - if the kid wants to play ball because hes having fun and high school is over and he still wants to play (because he has fun when he plays) - then what happens if the parents haven't "gotten him seen" or done the work to expose him to those that would have him play at the next level? Where does he get to have fun playing baseball then? I guess there are a few rec leagues for older kids and Am Legion, but what else?

In our case, there were many many many discussions between us and our son about whether or not he truly wanted to play at the next level and did he really want to go to the showcases, etc. AFter all, it is a lot of time and $$$. It was always his decision to attend these events or play on the teams. It was his desire to try to play at the next level that we went after. As parents, are we glad that he's moving on? Absolutely. Does he play because he loves to play - without a doubt! It is, and always has been, his choice. And will we support him if he finds baseball in college isn't working out - Absolutely!

    Thanks "Smarty"!

We may hitch a wagon to the back of the McBride's truck to save on gas money and spend one more summer with our friends from last season... I just might have a few more stories to tell. Hugh, I know some folks will always say we're "just singin' to the choir" about the opportunities our boys got from playing with the DB's. But, you and I know what the deal is.
