It all depends on whether the Burke County School board upholds the rules. If the ignore them and let students commute from the Patton district to Freedom or East Burke then the coaches at Patton will not have a lot of tallent to start up with. Buncombe County is a prime example of this. There's an old saying over there that many good athletes have been raised in PO boxes in Fairview. I beleive the McCaints were in the enka or erwin district but chose to attend Asheville High. I guess it happens in every multi high school county. We don't have to worry about this in McDowell at this time since we only have one high school but that may change in the not to distant future because the powers that be are pushing for a second high school and as witnessed last week with the coach silver decission they will most likely get what they want.

The transfer sit out for a year rule has never been enforced.I dont think they should make a kid for has been to a certain school for 2 years and sit out a year just because they want to stay at that school.I also feel athletes are being singled out because of this rule.it should apply to everyone who is in extra curricular activities it they want this policy. The policy i know for a fact has never been consistant. They have been kids for have transferred and got to play sports at that other school while they have told others they would have to sit out.this happened last year as a matter of fact.if some get to play at the school they transfer to then all should get to play.

You're absolutely right!!! As a matter of fact, this year at EB, the varsity softball pitcher transferred from the Freedom district and got to play. It's really crazy to punish an athlete for wanting to stay in the school with the people they have known all their lives. Whether or not burke county will enforce this with the new schools remains to be seen. After this year....nothing surprises me.

HUH??? Maybe you are confused about the rules here, but ANY kid that lives within the ASHEVILLE CITY LIMITS may attend Asheville High School, regardless if they are in Enka, Erwin, Reynolds or Roberson Buncombe Co. district. There are lots of kids that live within the "City" that don't go to the "city" schools. They do this because they are also living in the "Buncombe County" district as well because Asheville IS in Buncombe County!

I know the transfer rule has always been enforced in Caldwell County. I know of a couple students that transfered and did sit out a year. But here as everywhere most get around this by renting a house for a year or two or just moving into the district. Plenty of houses around here for sale so moving is no problem

There is a new school in Guilford County - North or Northern Guilford opening next year. They'll draw kids from Northeast Guilford or Northwest Guilford. Those schools usually have good teams. And I have heard the boys coach from High Point Central is heading there. Can't recall his name but he had some good teams at Central.

It's actually good for my school, Ragsdale that he moved there. A couple of Ragsdale kids went to Central to play for him - good players - and they may head back to Ragsdale now. Coach Shoemaker is building a nice program in Jamestown - should be good for the next few years with the talent coming through.

North Guilford - the county has finally covered every direction. I guess from here on out they'll have to get creative with the new school names.

In other words...since Asheville High is operated by a different entity, parents have a choice between letting their kids go to the City School System (Asheville HS) or the County School System (Reynolds, Roberson, Enka).
