Thanks for the info Braves. I obviously was unaware of the on-campus vs. off-campus distinction. That clears things up considerably for me. I hope TBR and all of you gurus out there are still around in about 16 yrs when my now one year old son is (hopefully) going through this process. I'm willing to bet that the NCAA rules will probably be a little different then. :laugh4:

    Risky???

"The benefit for the school is obvious. They've locked up a player early...and in baseball, other schools will move on."

I agree, they've locked up a player BUT...it's this extremely risky? The school is investing money and a scholarship to a 16 year-old that still has 2 years of high school left. Especially with the reduced rosters coming I would think they would value their scholly a little more. We all know kids can change and things can happen quickly when you're dealing with 16 and 17 Y.O.'s.

Braves, let me try one more time to ask the question. I know a kid can be 'invited'. But can the coach make a specific financial offer & talk about $$$$ when he is a Sophomore? Can he say: "If you come, we'll find a way to cover 3/4ths of your expenses" or some variance like that??

As you know, in the major D1 sports (football & basketball), there are full scholarships abounding. So an early commit knows what he will receive.

But baseball (like the minor sports) cuts up the 11.7 pie. That's why I asked my coach friend what can be 'promised'. His response was "No money can be promised until the summer before his senior year." But he said coaches circumvent this by hypothetically talking about what a kid who makes the team could expect.

I'm just curious if that's the it goes down. Sounds to me like my friend is off base or I misunderstood his answer.

    1/3 rule

I suppose now w/ new rule if they are pretty sure they will offer a scholly, it must be a miniumum of a 1/3 scholarship.....right? so they'd be safe to "guarantee" at least a 1/3???

Great point E of R, but with this caveat: The bottom end is now clearly defined IF the Kid gets any athletic scholarship money.

Which brings me back to my question: Can a coach strike a specific verbal 'contract' with a Kid that promises a specific amount of money before the summer prior to his Senior year?

Braves has said "yes". I'm just asking him (or someone in the know) to clarify that point for me. Just curious...I have no other motives.

    UK7Dook3,

My son had verbally committed early in his Junior year and we knew what was being offered....nothing changed when he signed his letter of intent.

in ncaa football the head coach can only see the recruit off campus once. a head coach who attends the shrine bowl has used his off campus visit on every player there and cannot visit them again. a prospect can come on campus anytime but the head coach can only visit once. i'm not sure what it is in basketball. football and basketball below d1 are usually partilals too.

Thanks dback...I thought I was clear (no disrespect to you Dukey).

But I thought it was self explanatory. Who would ever commit to a school if they didn't know what was on the table? That ain't never goin' to happen; I don't care what grade!
