Very refreshing. Speed kills if it's under control. But there is a place in baseball for the guy with head & heart.

Maddux comes to mind. Greg doesn't beat you...he just keeps you from beating him. Next thing you know, he's won 300 & is an HOF.

Same for Tom Glavine. The guy looks like he's throwing BP; he's on the doorstep of 300 wins.

That is a great article. I was in Burlington, NC last Friday night to see Benji Johnson and the Danville Braves play the Burlington Royals and I thought it was strange that there were no "guns" behind the plate. It did seem that the Royals pitchers were pitching more than just throwing.
If this was to become a trend, it will take a loooong time for it to reach the college level... at least at the "big" schools. My son pitched a game with his school summer team, last summer, over at NC State. His high school coach asked one of the State asst. coaches what he thought. The response was "he could definantly make the team as a walk-on, but we don't give scholarship money to RHP's who don't throw over 90".
It all worked out in the end though. My son will be playing a "mid-level" D-I school this coming year and it just so happens that State is usually on thier schedule. Ya'll can imagine what I'm hoping for!

As a side note, there is a book called "Dollar Sign on the Muscle" that is a great read on the world of scouting. It was written in the early to mid eighties when the radar gun was just becoming fairly common. The comments from the "old-timer" scouts about the gun are interesting to say the least.

    bats

Where does the metal bat vs. wood bat issue come into play in this speed vs. location / breaking pitches / off-speed debate?
